PhD Fellowships in Cephalopod population genomics at University of Copenhagen

University of Copenhagen
POSITION: PhD Fellowships in Cephalopod population genomics at the Centre for GeoGenetics
A PhD fellowship is available to commence on 1st March 2012, at the Centre for GeoGenetics, Natural History Museums of Denmark, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen.
 PROJECT AREA
Advances in "Next-Generation" DNA sequencing technologies have lead to the development of laboratory and bioinformatic tools that can be used to undertake genomic level analyses with regards to questions related to population genetics and phylogenetics. In this regard, a PhD fellowship is available with the specific aim of applying targetted-high throughput exome sequencing in order to better describe cephalopod populations. Specifically the successful applicant will be required to develop the means to extract high quality DNA from both freshly sampled and archival cephalopod tissues, develop target-capture assays based around the MySelect system, undertake Illumina HiSeq sequencing of the DNA, and analyse the results in both the population genetic and phylogenetic contexts.
 QUALIFICATIONS:
For consideration, the applicants must have the following key skills:
a)      MSc with a strong background in molecular biology, population genetics and phylogenetics
b)      Background knowledge of cephalopod biology
c)      Demonstrated experience with the handling of DNA from degraded and modern samples
d)      Demonstrated experience in working with Second Generation DNA Sequencing platforms and data
e)      Demonstrated ability to independently run research projects, in particular in the field away from day-to-day supervision
f)       Demonstrated internationalisation of previous research such as through peer-review publication.
Skills of additional, although not requisite, interest include:
a)      Teaching and/or supervision experience
b)      Experience in independent fundraising
c)      Outreach experience
If successfully chosen, the fellowship will be required to start on, or as close to, 1st March 2012.

As the members and collaborators of the Centre are international, the working language of the Centre is English, thus excellent English speaking, reading and writing skills are required.
PRINCIPAL PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT AND PLACE OF WORK: Centre for Geogenetics, Natural History Museum of Denmark, Ă˜ster Voldgade 5-7, 1350 Copenhagen.
 APPLICATION:
The application must contain:
Curriculum vitae (incl. the applicants email address)
List of publications
Motivation for applying (0.5 A4-page)
Transcript of university examinations (in English)
Contact details of 2 persons for references
For further information please contact Prof. Tom Gilbert (tgilbert@snm.ku.dk )
Applications will be evaluated by an assessment committee. The applicant will be notified of the composition of the committee. Each applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant. In addition experience with some of the above mentioned methods would be an advantage.
 SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The successful applicant will be hired as a PhD student at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen for a three year period. Information on the PhD programs at the Faculty of Science can be found at http://www.science.ku.dk/phd/
Terms of appointment and payment according with the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations within the range of 23,000-30,000 DKK/month (approximately 3,100-4,000 Euro/month).
The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
