Description of Content:
This programme unites research activities aimed at an integrated view of the cell and its regulatory networks, with the leading question being how subcellular modules of cells interact and function at the level of gene regulation, signal transmission, and topology. Model systems range from prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) and eukaryotic microbes to plant and animal cells including disease models, enabling the identification of conserved principles. Furthermore, platforms are available for the analysis of genomes, transcription signatures, large scale protein identification, metabolomics, and imaging, together with large scale data analysis and quantitative modelling.

Research centres around two major themes. The first deals with cell fate control, asking how cells control their proliferation and survival, their differentiation and function, and their response to external signals ranging from nutrients to stress. It also includes the analysis of cancer. The second theme addresses topology and dynamics of intracellular compartments as well as with intercellular communication. The programme integrates "red", "green", and prokaryotic cell biology. It is affiliated with two DFG Research Units dealing with cancer (RU 942 and CRU 179).

Description of Content:
The scientific focus of the programme is primarily on microbial model systems, ranging from prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) to eukaryotic microbes, including the interactions between microorganisms and multicellular organisms. These interactions can be beneficial, as between plants and some bacteria, or harmful, as between human cells and pathogenic bacteria. In the research groups participating in the PhD programme, platforms are available in various participating groups for the analysis of genomes, transcription signatures, large-scale protein identification, metabolomics, and imaging. The research programme includes the analysis of gene regulation and cell differentiation of microorganisms, the identification and functional characterisation of protein complexes, and the elucidation of the relation between pathogenic bacteria and their host cells. Moreover, we try to find novel enzymes using metagenomic approaches together with the exploitation of genomes of biotechnologically relevant microorganisms.

Description of Content:
Situated advantageously at the heart of Western Europe in Germany's largest metropolis, the Graduate School of Biomedical Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen integrates all PhD and MD graduates within the Faculties of Biology and Medicine into a cutting-edge interdisciplinary study programme offering doctoral students an outstanding, globally-focused academic education. Our current research foci are:

- Host-Pathogen Interaction (GRK 1045)
- Gene Transcription (GRK 1431)
- Cellular & Molecular Immunology
- Genetics & Cell Biology
- Ischaemia, Reperfusion & Angiogenesis
- Tumour & Signalling

In addition, our rapidly-expanding biomedical campus offers young scientists access to state-of-the-art research facilities and the opportunity to work at the interface of basic and clinical science.

Within the ever-growing range of graduate school activities, doctoral students are frequently given the opportunity for close international interaction and cross-cultural networking with fellow graduates, visiting researchers and keynote speakers.

The working language of the graduate school is English. A dual rationale lies behind this decision: firstly, German-speaking participants are offered a platform for the intensive development of their English skills within a familiar working environment and, secondly, international graduates are in no way disadvantaged by a foreign language barrier when participating in the BIOME programme.

A guiding mission of the graduate school is its focus on the principles of fair play and the practice of scientific integrity. Awareness of and adherence to good scientific conduct is central to the rigorous training of young researchers for the protection of their intellectual property and rights and the ethical development of successful careers.

The university's drive to provide structures promoting soft skills, gender equality and family-oriented support further contributes to an excellent, all-round tertiary environment.
