POST: Regional Scientist-Plant Breeding & Seed Production

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Contribute to collaborative groundnut breeding, research and capacity building activities in the framework of ICRISAT’s overall project agenda

•Designing and implementing groundnut trials on-farm in close collaboration with public sector partners (national and international).

•Work with public and private sector partners to support seed production (breeder, basic, and certified) of disease and drought resistant groundnuts varieties

•Technical backstopping and capacity strengthening of public sector partners in participatory variety selection.

•Assist in the design and implementation of alternate seed system dissemination plans, including line maintenance, production of breeders, and basic seed of improved and released groundnuts varieties with relevant public and private sector institutions for increased certified seed production, and field-based activities for promotion and enhanced adoption by the target communities.

Work with other ICRISAT staff to improve the capacity (including development of training modules on seed production, and conduct training in seed business management, seed multiplication, seed marketing, quality assurance, etc.) of public and private sector partners in the seed systems (including small- and medium-sized seed companies, community-based and non-governmental organizations) to empower them to produce and distribute seed (breeder, basic, and certified).

DESIRED CANDIDATE’S PROFILE:

•PhD degree in plant breeding or closely related field with knowledge of experimental design, management of field trials, field breeding operations, and data analysis.

•Minimum 3 years of experience in public or private sector breeding programs.

•Aptitude for field-based crop research.

•Excellent computer skills and experience with SAS, GENSTAT, or other statistical software.

•A record of publications in peer reviewed journals of repute

•Proficiency in spoken and written English, with an ability to communicate information in a cogent and informative manner.

•Strong self-motivation and innovative skills, coupled with interest in international agricultural research and development

•Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural partnerships.

•Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work under pressure

•Good partnership building and networking experience with the public and private sectors.

This is a regional position in the Special Project Scientist Cadre of ICRISAT.  The position is initially for a period of two years and renewable depending on performance of the incumbent and funding availability. POST: Manager, Watersheds

RESPONSIBILITIES: Integration of management, development, and research aspects of on-farm and on-station watersheds.  Good knowledge and skills in the integrated watershed management concept, engineering aspects of watershed development including topographic survey, construction of rainwater harvesting structures, preparation of GIS maps, and preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) and conduct of research trials in the areas of soil, water, and nutrient management. The incumbent is expected to travel extensively to watershed sites in India.

DESIRED CANDIDATE’S PROFILE: The candidate should have MSc in Agricultural Engineering with a minimum 15 years of hands-on experience in reputed research institution. Degree/Diploma in Agricultural Engineering with 20 years of relevant experience will be considered. Incumbent should be well versed with handling and management of various instruments used in the watersheds such as total survey station, runoff and soil loss recorders, groundwater  level meters, pressure plates, soil moisture measuring devices like neutron probes and TDR, etc. Good data handling and processing computer skills are essential. The person must have good proficiency in English writing and communication skills; knowledge of more Indian languages will be an added advantage. Candidate with evidence of good quality Publications in the area of watershed management will be preferred.

 DESIRED CANDIDATE’S PROFILE: The candidate should be MSc in analytical chemistry, with at least 15 years of experience in handling analytical laboratory and field experimentation in the area of soil fertility and balanced nutrient management in well reputed research institution. Graduate with 20 years of relevant experience may also be considered. He/she must be well versed with the recent analytical methods and handling of state of the art equipments such as ICP, AAS, Auto analyser, C and N analyser, microwave, etc. Knowledge about computer operation, statistical analysis of data, and interpretation of soil and plant analysis data is essential. Experience at supervisory level in analytical laboratory and on-farm trials will be preferred and person must be a good team player.
