National Training Programme at Cental institute of Research on Goat(CIRG)

National Training Programme
on
GENETIC DISSECTION OF COMPLEX TRAIT ANALYSIS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO GENETIC RESISTANCE TO GIN IN GOATS
Sponsored under
National Agricultural Innovation Project
at
CIRG, Makhdoom, Farah, 281122, Mathura, UP India
November 15-28, 2011,
Course Director
Dr. Pramod K Rout
About the programme
Domestic animals constitute a unique resource for understanding the genetic basis of phenotypic diversity. Genetic variation in host resistance to infectious disease is ubiquitous. The increasing realization of this phenomenon has led to disease biology becoming a major focus of ecology and genetic research. Complex interactions occur between the host animal population and the pathogen, and these interactions will vary temporally, spatially and with the host genotype. Moreover, the infection and subsequent host immune-response processes are multifactorial.

The main objective of this course is how epidemiological modelling and genetics may be combined to enable researchers to predict the consequences of genetically altering the resistance genotype of the host population. This is the rich area of innovation having practical utility in farmer’s field. Therefore this course will focus on finer scale dissection of genomic region to enable precise genetic selection, and the use of statistical and mathematical models to identify host genetic factors and environmental factors for the control of disease in population. The inclusion of disease resistance trait in the breeding goal will enhance the agricultural productivity in sustainable manner by increasing the productivity of flock, producing farm produce free from drug residue, decreasing the treatment cost, decreasing pasture contamination, increasing performance and most importantly improving animal health and welfare.

CONTENTS

Introduction to Genetics of disease resistance in Farm animals

Genomics of host resistance to nematode infection in ruminants

Identification of Indicator traits with respect to GIN infection in ruminants

Mapping chromosomal regions containing genes affecting resistance traits ( microsatellite and SNP genotyping, Map construction and estimation of QTL position, Association of SNP marker with desired trait)

Gene expression in real time PCR

Exploring statistical models to quantify genetic resistance

Genetic modelling to predict response to selection
