Appointment of Faculty under INSPIRE Faculty Scheme
The Centre S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Block JD, Sector III, Salt Lake, Kolkata 700 098 (established in 1986 with a 15 acre green campus) is an autonomous institution funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Centre with a current strength of nearly 30 faculties, more than 15 post doctoral research staff and about 130 students have research activities in focused areas of basic sciences. It has research activities (Theoretical, Computational and Experimental) in different areas of Physical, Chemical and Mathematical Sciences.  INSPIRE FACULTY SCHEME
The INSPIRE Faculty Scheme is a scheme initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Under this Scheme, young post-doctoral scholars below the age of 32 PhD can be appointed as INSPIRE faculty under contract for upto 5 years. The consolidated salary will be equivalent to that of an Assistant Professor at IIT. The Scheme provides also Rs. 7 lakh per year per scientist as a research start-up grant.
ABOUT THE CANDIDATE
The Centre is looking for Scientists and Academics with brilliant academic and research records in current areas of advanced basic sciences (established through steady publications in latest peer reviewed journals) for appointment under INSPIRE faculty scheme on a contractual basis for a maximum period of 5 years. (Please visit the website: www.inspire-dst.gov.in for details). The candidate should be below 32 years of age and can be a fresh Ph. D. or having post-doctoral experience of 1-2 years after PhD.
The candidates who have PhD done in one of the following areas will be given preference: Quantum Information, High Precision Spectro-microscopy, Astrophysical and Astronomical Observational Science, and Computational Physical and Chemical Sciences.
APPOINTMENT OF INSPIRE FACULTY AT THE CENTRE
The faculties selected for appointment will receive the benefits as per DST norms for INSPIRE faculty.
In addition to the start up grant given by DST, the Centre may consider additional initial equipment grant upto Rs. 35 lakhs for candidates who would set-up new facilities in designated areas. The grant will be based on submission of an internal project proposal.
The performance of the selected candidates will be monitored through regular evaluation. The candidates may be considered for absorption against existing vacancy within 5 years, subject to excellent performance as demonstrated by publications in Journals of high impact factor and on initiative shown. If not absorbed against an existing vacancy, the appointment is co-terminus with the tenure of the fellowship.

·         In addition, the Young Researcher will receive a contingency grant of Rs. 5.00 lakhs per annum for meeting the expenses on consumables, minor equipment, international and domestic travel, manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of research project under the Award.
HOST INSTITUTION:
The Institution where the candidate is working will provide the necessary infrastructure and administrative support for pursuing research under this Award.
DURATION:
The duration of the Award will be initially for three years, extendable further by two years, on a review by the Trust’s Experts’ Committee.

ABOUT THE CANDIDATES
The Centre is looking for persons possessing Doctorate (PhD degree)(including those who recently submitted thesis or are about to submit thesis in next 3 months) for appointment as a PDRA in the Centre. In case a candidate who has submitted thesis is selected for PDRA, the evidence of Ph. D. degree obtained has to be submitted to the Centre within one year of joining.
The applicant prior to PhD should have a first class, in B.Sc. and M. Sc or equivalent examinations.
An applicant who has a recent PhD/submitted/about to submit thesis, must have at least three (3) publications in refereed journal of impact factor preferably greater than one (1) when the application is made.
For candidates who are having post doctoral experience, the minimum number of should be five (5) in refereed journal of impact factor preferably greater than one (1). The selected candidates will be strongly engaged to work independently. However, a member of the faculty will act as a mentor.
AGE LIMIT
The upper age limit for award of PDRA shall be 35 years. The upper age limit is relaxable upto 5 years in the case of applicants belonging to scheduled caste/tribes, women, physically handicapped and OBC candidates.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications in plain paper with complete CV supported by all relevant documents pertaining to academic qualifications, a short statement of research interest and at least two (2) letters of reference can be sent by the applicant at postdocapply@bose.res.in. For applicants who are having post-doctoral experience should give names of at least three (3) references one of whom should be thesis supervisor and the other the supervisor of the first assignment.
The soft-copy should be followed by a hard copy.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
The screening of applications for PDRA will be done twice a year in January and July.
The selection would be through assessment of academic achievements of the candidate and by interview by a Selection Committees constituted for the purpose. Second class AC rail fare is admissible to those applicants who are called for interview. The validity of the offer of award shall be six months from the date mentioned in the award letter. The recommendation of the Selection Committee as approved by the Director will be final.
EMOLUMENTS
The emoluments for PDRAs will be as per norms of the Department of Science & Technology,  Government of India in the category of Research Associate -I, Research Associate –II and Research Associate-III and HRA as per Government of India rules as per table below:

Research Associate -I: Rs. 22,000 + 30% HRA
Research Associate –II: Rs. 23,000 + 30% HRA
Research Associate-III: Rs. 24,000 + 30% HRA
All fresh PhD's or those who have submitted will be placed as Research Associate -I.
PDRA will be entitled to a contingency grant which will be fixed year to year basis.
The contingency grant will be used for research purpose and research related domestic travel.
TENURE: Associateship will be tenable initially for a period of one year. It may be extended further for a period of one year based on satisfactory progress as assessed by a Committee.
