FELLOWSHIPS AT NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF BIOMEDICAL GENOMICS

OBJECTIVE: To promote the goals of the institute and to facilitate re-entry of scientists of indian origin working abroad.  

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants for this Fellowship should possess Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent degree relevant to biomedical genomics, with an outstanding track record reflected in publications and other professional achievements. Applicants must not have affiliation to an institution in India.  Awardees will carry out their scientific research in NIBMG or in other collaborating institutions. 

EMOLUMENTS AND DURATION: Each awardee will receive a consolidated fellowship of Rs 75,000 per month and a contingency grant (not exceeding Rs. 500,000 per annum) linked to a project to be proposed by the applicant at the time of application.  The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of five years. In case an awardee during the tenure of the fellowship finds a suitable job at any research institute/university, he or she will be permitted to relinquish the fellowship and take up the job. 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:  Each applicant should provide a Curriculum Vitae and the following:

(a)   Summary of pre-doctoral training (with details of major courses taken and grades obtained) [about 10 sentences],

(b)   Highlights of doctoral training and publications [about 20 sentences],

(c)    Highlights of post-doctoral training and publications [about 30 sentences],

(d)   Problems to be addressed in the next 5 years, with clear indication of the importance of the problems and methodologies to be adopted in solving them [about 3 pages],

(e)   Description of long-term (5-15 years) professional goals [about 1 page], and

(f)     A specific project proposal (with clear descriptions of objectives, methodologies, importance and timelines) to be carried out in the next 5 years, with budget and justification [6-10 pages].

RAMANUJAN FELLLOWSHIP from DST(Re-entry fellowship for Indian scientists working abroad) International

RAMANUJAN FELLOWSHIPS

Nominations are invited for the ‘Ramanujan Fellowships’ recently instituted by the Government of India. The fellowship is meant for brilliant scientists and engineers from all over the world to take up scientific research positions in India, especially those scientists who want to return to India from abroad. The fellowships are scientist-specific and very selective. The Ramanujan Fellows could work in any of the scientific institutions and universities in the country and they would be eligible for receiving regular research grants through the extramural funding schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

SCOPE All areas of science (in the broadest terms) will be covered by this fellowship.

ELIGIBILITY

i)                    The fellowship is open to brilliant scientists and engineers from all over the world who are below the age of 60 years.

ii) The applicant should possess a higher degree or equivalent, such as Ph.D. in Science/Engineering, Masters in Engineering or Technology/MD in Medicine, etc. and have adequate professional experience.

iii) These Fellowships are very selective and only those who have a proven/outstanding track record as evident from their research publications and recognitions would be eligible.

iv) The candidate has to opt for either this fellowship or his present position/fellowship, if any.

DURATION

The duration of the fellowship will be initially for five years.

NATURE OF SUPPORT

• The value of the fellowship will be Rs. 75,000/- per month.

• Each Fellow will, in addition, receive a per contingency of Rs. 5.00 lakh annum for conferences and other expenses.

• The Ramanujan Fellows will be eligible for receiving regular research grants through the extramural funding schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

METHODOLOGY FOR SELECTION

• The scientists can choose to work at any S&T institution including University Departments or other academic Institutions and National Laboratories in India, provided the Institution at which they wish to pursue research is willing to provide the necessary R&D, administrative and basic infrastructural support to facilitate research.

• The availability of Ramanujan Fellowships will be advertised by various academic and research

Institutions on their websites in order to receive applications from interested scientists and technologists.

The Institutions will subsequently submit their recommended nominations to the Department of Science & Technology. Institutions may consider setting up appropriate mechanisms to scrutinize and recommend the nominations.

• Individual scientists and technologists can also approach the institutions for hosting them for the Fellowship and forwarding their nominations to DST for the Fellowship.

• Selection of Ramanujan Fellows will be made periodically by an empowered Search-cum Selection Committee specially appointed for the purpose.

• The nominations of scientists and technologists by the Institutions would be received throughout the year. There is, thus, no last date for this scheme.

Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship

Applications are invited for ‘Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India. Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship’

OBJECTIVE

The scheme is aimed at bringing back researchers (Indian nationals) working overseas in

various fields of biotechnology, including agriculture, health sciences, bio-engineering, energy,

environment, bioinformatics and other related areas, who are desirous of pursing R&D in an

Indian institution.

ELIGIBILITY

The applicant should possess a Ph.D., MD or equivalent degree with an outstanding track record

as reflected in publications and other recognitions.

Only candidates (Indian nationals) working overseas are eligible to apply. Those who have

already returned to India and are working in India are not eligible.

UPPER AGE LIMIT: 55 years as on 31 August 2011.

FELLOWSHIP: Rs 75,000 p.m. (consolidated) and House Rent Allowance of Rs 7500 p.m. Wherever host institute provides accommodation to the fellow, the HRA amount will be deducted by the institution.

Research/contingency grant of Rs 500,000/year for purchase of consumables, minor equipment,

international and domestic travel, engaging manpower and other contingent expenditure to be

incurred in connection with the implementation of research project.

CONDITIONS: Host institutes are encouraged to provide medical benefits, transport allowance, leave travel allowance and other benefits as per their prevailing norms as applicable to their employees of the rank equivalent to Scientist D out of their own resources/funds.

In case an awardee finds a suitable permanent position during the tenure of the fellowship at any research institute/university, he or she can take up the job. In that case, he/she will have to opt for either the fellowship or salary. However, she/he can continue to avail the research/contingency grant with prior approval of DBT.

Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellows could take up fellowship at any of the scientific institutes/

university in the country. However, application should be duly forwarded by the competent

authority of the host Institute.

Awardees are eligible to apply for research grants to any of the funding agencies. However, the Co-PI has to be a permanent employee of the host institution.

DURATION:  The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of five years. This is extendable by another 5 years on a fresh appraisal of performance.
