National Conference on Diabetes mellitus and Cancer will be organized by the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology on 17th December 2011. Diabetes mellitus, a leading metabolic disorder worldwide, has significant impact on health, quality of life and life expectancy of patients. Reasons for tremendous increase in the number of diabetic patients in India include increasing number of ageing population, sedentary life style and physical inactivity. Cancer is the major health problem worldwide and one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in children and adults. The incidence and death rate due to cancer in India will rise by the factor of 3 between the years 1991 and 2025 simply as a function of ageing and life style modifications.
Medicinal plants play an important role in the prevention of disease. India is rich source of traditional medicine which is plant based. A vast majority of Indians living in villages and tribal areas depend largely on medicinal plants and herbs for their health care needs. This conference will provide a forum for discussing the role of natural products and their bioactive constituents in the prevention of cancer and diabetes.
A large number of experts from different areas of Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Cytogenetics and Bioinformatics are expected to attend the conference. We request you to take this opportunity to participate in this conference. Your active participation is highly solicited. Kindly circulate this invitation to your colleagues and friends, who may be interested in attending such conference. Hope to see you all at our temple town, Chidambaram.
Symposium mainly focuses on:
·         Recent trends in diabetes mellitus and cancer
·         Molecular and biochemical markers of diabetes mellitus and cancer
·         Preventive strategies for cancer and diabetes mellitus
·         Role of free radicals and antioxidants in cancer and diabetes mellitus

International Symposium on Innate Immunity: Sensing the Microbes and Damage Signals

Innate Immunity: Sensing the Microbes and Damage Signals (Q7)
Sponsored by Gilead Sciences, Inc. Supported by an educational donation provided by Amgen.
Organizers: Gabriel Nuñez and Akiko Iwasaki
March 4 - 9, 2012 • Keystone Resort  •  Keystone, Colorado
In recent years there have been major advances in our understanding of the mechanisms that are involved in the recognition of microbes and subsequent activation of host immune defenses. Several classes of membrane-bound and cytosolic pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) have been identified and partially characterized. These include the Toll-like receptors (TLRs), NOD-like receptors (NLRs) and RIG-I-like receptors (RLRs). Activation of PRRs leads to the production of a large array of pro-inflammatory and anti-microbial molecules that are critical for the elimination of invading pathogens, and activation of adaptive immune responses. A class of cytosolic PRRs is involved in the assembly of the inflammasome, a molecular platform that mediates activation of caspase-1 and secretion of mature IL-1beta and IL-18. Importantly, activation of the inflammasome is also induced by non-microbial mechanisms including endogenous molecules involved in the pathogenesis of metabolic and inflammatory diseases. In addition, there is evidence that autophagy, a cellular process that mediates recycling of intracellular components, is involved in microbial recognition and plays a key role in host defense. The initial sensing of microbes often occurs at mucosal surfaces, but the interplay between recognition of commensal vs. pathogenic microbes on the host immune system is only beginning to be uncovered. The goal of the Keystone Symposia meeting on Innate Immunity: Sensing the Microbes and Damage Signals is to gather scientists working on innate immunity to discuss cutting edge research on the mechanisms that regulate the activation of the immune system by microbes as well as by endogenous damage signals, and to integrate such knowledge in the context of inflammation, homeostasis, host defense, and disease. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions will be significantly enhanced by the concurrent meeting on The Microbiome, which will share a keynote address and three plenary sessions with this meeting.

Keystone Symposium on Fungal Pathogens: From Basic Biology to Drug Discovery

Fungal Pathogens: From Basic Biology to Drug Discovery (J2)
Part of the Keystone Symposia Global Health Series, Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Organizers: Joseph Heitman, John Taylor and Leah E. Cowen
January 15 - 20, 2012 • Santa Fe Community Convention Center  •  Santa Fe, New Mexico

The aim of this meeting is to bring together the academic, medical and pharmaceutical communities focused on fungal microbial pathogens of humans and other animals to illustrate common themes, and therapeutic, diagnostic and preventive opportunities. We seek to bridge both basic and physician-scientists working on the pathogenic microbe (via genetics, cell biology, genomics) and the host (immunology, including both innate and adaptive immunity). With respect to therapeutics, the emphasis is on developed as well as novel therapeutics, including both drugs and vaccines. A key aspect is to bridge the communities working on the diversity of fungi that infect humans and those working on the chytrid outbreak causing amphibian decline and extinctions. Opportunities for interdisciplinary interactions will be significantly enhanced by the concurrent meeting on Drug Discovery for Protozoan Parasites, which will share the keynote address and two plenary sessions with this meeting.
