Mitochondria in Biology and Medicine
9 – 10 December 2011
and
Pre-Conference Workshop on
High-Resolution Respirometry (O2K)
8th December 2011
CSIR - Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Uppal Road, Hyderabad, INDIA
Mitochondria are classically more popular as the powerhouse of a cell. Recently it has started making strides in to various research areas of human concerns. Large numbers of people in India, particularly children, are affected with mitochondrial diseases. However, there is not much awareness about the disease among the public as well as the clinicians. Therefore, it is important to spread knowledge about the mitochondrial dysfunction and its implications. Hence, we felt that there is a need for a society, which can bridge a gap between basic and clinical research, by organizing conferences / meetings / workshops. With this aim, we have registered a non-profit organization, "Society for Mitochondrial Research and Medicine-India" (SMRM) in 2007. We are happy to announce that the SMRM organizes its 1st Annual Conference on "Mitochondria in Biology and Medicine", which would be a wonderful opportunity for the students, scientists, clinicians and public to discuss about the recent trends in mitochondrial research. We have made efforts to invite speakers working on various aspects of mitochondria, such as; physiology, toxicology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, diagnostics and dysfunctions. On behalf of the SMRM and CCMB, we extend very warm welcome to those who are interested in mitochondria related research to attend this conference.
Pre-Conference Workshop
High-Resolution Respirometry (O2k)
8th December, 2011
Limited to only 20 participants
As a part of the 1st Annual Conference of SMRM, we are organizing a one-day Workshop, prior to the conference, on High-Resolution Respirometry (O2k). Mitochondrial energetics not only decides the fate of cells but provide information between the environment and the epigenome. Mitochondrial membrane potential is a key force in bioenergetics and is dependent on the respiratory efflux. High Resolution Respirometry (O2K) is being applied for the functional diagnosis of mitochondrial defects by monitoring of metabolic parameters in small samples of biopsies, cultured cells and isolated mitochondria.
The workshop is aimed to train a total of 20 students/young scientists. Preference would be given to those who are working in the field of mitochondria.
