Uppsala University
POST: Professor in Virology at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology.
DESCRIPTION OF THE SCIENTIFIC FIELD: Research within the field of virology at the Faculty of Medicine encompasses studies of human viruses of medical importance as well as relevant experimental model systems. For the advancement of the discipline within Uppsala University, the holder of the position should have a research programme that strengthens and expands ongoing laboratory research.
DUTIES: The professorship entails an overall responsibility for research and doctoral education within the field of virology as well as supervision and teaching in first- , second- and third-cycle programmes. The duties include leading an active research group in virology, but also to contribute to a positive development of the discipline in cooperation with the faculty’s researchers and teachers. Administrative duties, as well as external and internal commissions of trust may also be part of the duties. Furthermore, the duties include public outreach regarding research and development (within the research field).
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: According to Chap. 4, § 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance the eligibility criteria for employment as professor are scientific as well as pedagogic proficiency. According to the appointment regulations of Uppsala University, it is also a general requirement that teachers have any other skills, which are necessary to carry out their duties competently. According to the employment policy of Uppsala University, the scientific proficiency should be demonstrated through independent research that significantly exceeds the qualifications required for the Swedish title of “docent”. Competence in planning and leadership is important. The applicant must have the teaching proficiency required for the position and, in addition, except in special circumstances, formal pedagogical training relevant for the tasks associated with this position.
The ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years of taking up the professorship.
RANKING: For this position, the ranking will be based primarily on the scientific and teaching proficiency of the applicants, with special emphasis on scientific proficiency. This order of priorities in the application of the different ranking criteria is not absolute. A combined consideration of all grounds of assessment could result, for instance, in an applicant with vastly superior pedagogical proficiency getting higher ranking than one with somewhat stronger scientific qualifications.
Scientific proficiency is primarily judged by the quality and quantity of the scientific publications with consideration given to depth and breadth. The degree of independence in developing and running research projects, and the ability to attract external research funding, is also considered parts of the scientific proficiency.
In examining the pedagogic proficiency, skills and experience in the planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision of doctoral candidates and examination will be considered.
OTHER PROFICIENCIES: Administrative proficiency is important and will be considered. Ability to cooperate with the surrounding society and to inform the public about research and development work will also be considered.
In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-at-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the programme and department.
Personal conditions (i.e. parental leave) that can benefit the applicant should be mentioned in the application.
Uppsala University is striving for a more even gender balance in its research and teaching staff and women are encouraged to apply for this position.
