Postdoctoral position(Permafrost - plant - microbiological changes) at University of Copenhagen

University of Copenhagen
POSITION: Postdoctoral position in Permafrost - plant - microbiological changes and interactions in Greenland
A new Center for Permafrost (CENPERM) at University of Copenhagen is recruiting a postdoctoral associate to work in the field of carbon and nitrogen stocks and turnover in permafrost-affected areas in Greenland. The position is financed and part of the upcoming CENPERM financed by the Danish National Research Foundation. CENPERM will integrate multidisciplinary research of biogeochemical and physical processes in a "climate-vegetation-soil-microorganism-permafrost" approach in transects across the major climate zones of Greenland. The ambition is that new insights in permafrost dynamics will improve the quantification and predictions of changes in carbon and nitrogen pools and greenhouse gas fluxes from Arctic ecosystems.
This post doctoral position is part of Theme 1 and 3 focussing on interacting processes between microorganisms, plants and soils within soil profiles in contrasting landscape and vegetation types. Investigations include mapping geomorphological changes, permafrost drilling in several vegetation/landscape types at five sites and integrating biologically mediated gas fluxes linked to predicted climate change in Greenland along the most critical and informative gradients. Part of the work will be related to the use of existing long-term ecosystem field manipulations of soil temperature, radiation, snow depth and water availability at Zackenberg and Nuuk in order to understand key processes controlling permafrost formation and decay, supplemented with new experimental plots at selected CENPERM sites.
The successful candidate in this position will be expected to work independently and take leadership in undertaking field work in the Arctic, co-supervising of PhD-students and take the lead in database management.
The place of work will be in Copenhagen but the candidate has to do field work in the Arctic about one month each year.
The position is open from February 1, 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter and funded for 30 months with a possibility of extension.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POST DOC POSITION
Candidates should preferably have a Ph.D. in Earth or Biological Sciences with a strong background in environmental soil-plant biogeochemistry and documented research in soil-plant interaction, preferable linked to greenhouse gas production/transport, and experience in undertaking fieldwork in the Arctic.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Postdoc Position(Bioinformatics) at University of Copenhagen

University of Copenhagen
POSITION: Postdoc Position for 2 years AML Biology, Machine Learning; Bioinformatics/genomics
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow with a solid background in bioinformatics and machine learning with a good understanding of acute myeloid leukaemia biology. The position will be available for two years. Successful candidates from abroad might have the possibility for paying a reduced tax rate (26%) in Denmark for the first three years.
Cancer is a generic term for a group of diseases in which the regulation of normal cell division is out of control. There are many underlying molecular causes for cancer. Hence, no matter whether the disease of individual patients may look alike in superficial terms the underlying genetic/epigenetic changes may result in very different disease causes. It is therefore essential that cancer patients are diagnosed exactly and on a personal level in order to identify the optimal treatment for the individual patient.
Relatively new research has also shown that cancer is maintained by the so-called cancer stem cells (CSC). These cells represent only a small portion of the tumour, but unlike the bulk cancer cells they have the ability to regenerate the tumour mass. Thus it is highly likely that CSCs are responsible for tumour relapse following treatment and it is therefore necessary to develop treatment strategies that target these rare cells.
In this program the successful applicant will use cell sorted cell populations, gene expression analysis and bioinformatics to characterize CSC in leukemic patients (blood cancer).
The aim is to define a precise and personalized molecular fingerprint for the CSCs, by comparing them with normal hematopoietic stem cells from healthy donors. This will be used to tailor a treatment directed at the individual patient CSCs, as well as to identify new targets for attacking these cells.
We have modern, well-equipped laboratories at our research center and an enthusiastic, international staff.
For further information please contact Ole Winther, owi@imm.dtu.dk  .
 SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The successful applicant will be hired as a postdoctoral fellow for a 2 year period. While negotiation for salary supplement is possible, the starting salary level is currently between DKK 31.400 and 33.070 a month (approx. US $ 6000) plus contribution to a pension scheme. Terms of appointment and payment according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC).
 APPLICATION:
The application must contain:
Cover letter (half to one page)
Curriculum vitae
Research experience
List of publications
Transcript of university examinations (in English or Danish)
Contact details of 2 persons for references
An assessment committee will evaluate the applications. The applicant will be notified of the members of the committee. Each applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills.
The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
