Genetic Susceptibility to Glial Tumors in the Context of Nf1 and p53
The Genetic Modifiers of Tumorigenesis Section of the Mouse Cancer Genetics Program at NCI-Frederick is recruiting a post-doctoral fellow to study modifiers of cancer susceptibility. We have identified at least 6 regions of the genome that affect whether mice are more or less susceptible to astrocytoma or malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Projects are available to test gene candidates and understand the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects. The laboratory is located on the Frederick campus of NCI with many state-of-the-art facilities for genomic analysis, pathology, small animal imaging, and proteomic analysis, among others (http://web.ncifcrf.gov/).
Projects include 1) characterizing candidate modifier genes for glial tumors and neurofibromatosis type I at the genetic, cellular, and molecular level; 2) studying the role of genome architecture and imprinted genes in susceptibility to cancer; 3) studying sex-specific differences in susceptibility to cancer.
Candidates are expected to have completed, or be completing, a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in biomedical research with a strong publication record and expertise in molecular and cell biological techniques. Candidates should have no more than one year of post-doctoral experience. Expertise in protein-protein interactions, signal transduction, and/or chromatin structure is preferred, but individuals with experience in imprinted genes, cancer biology, neurofibromatosis, mouse modeling, or tumors of the nervous system are also strongly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate should demonstrate passion for science, the ability to work independently and efficiently, and the ability to think critically and creatively about scientific problems. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
