Brain Structure, Function and Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease and Age-associated Cognitive Impairment
National Institute on Aging, Baltimore, MD
The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is recruiting postdoctoral fellows with interests in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and/or age-associated memory impairment (AAMI) in the Unit of Clinical and Translational Neuroscience, within the Laboratory of Behavioral Neuroscience.
This research represents an exciting new initiative within the NIA intramural research program (IRP) to enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms underlying risk factors for AD/AAMI, discover biologically relevant biomarkers that accurately reflect neuropathology and identify potential targets for effective disease modification/intervention. These studies combine multimodal neuroimaging methods to delineate changes in brain structure/function associated with risk factors for AD/AAMI (for eg: APOE genotype and longitudinal changes in cerebral blood flow in normal aging. Arch Neurol. 2010, 67(1):93-8) and employ mass spectrometry-based proteomic/metabolomic techniques for the identification of biomarkers related to pathological endophenotypes associated with neurodegeneration (for eg: Association of plasma clusterin concentration with severity, pathology, and progression in Alzheimer disease. Arch Gen Psychiatry. 2010, 67(7):739-48). The research benefits from the unique and rich longitudinal dataset available in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) as well as complementary patient cohorts such as AddNeuroMed that are available as part of ongoing international collaborations (for eg: Plasma biomarkers of brain atrophy in Alzheimer's disease. PLoS One. 2011;6(12):e28527).
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have research interests in the related fields of neuroscience, human biology or cognition. Experience with analysis of neuropsychological or neuroimaging data, and/or biomarker identification with strong writing skills are desirable. Preference will be given to individuals who are able to work independently and within a team. Those with experience in structural MRI and/or PET imaging in humans will be preferred. Fellowship duration is typically 3-4 years. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in neuroscience/neuroimaging or M.D., with less than five years of postdoctoral research experience. The position is located in Baltimore, MD, a city with a stimulating scientific and cultural environment, with proximity to the Johns Hopkins medical campus. Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
To Apply:
Please send curriculum vitae, a brief description of research interests, and three letters of reference to: Madhav Thambisetty, MD, Ph.D., Laboratory of Behavioral Neuroscience, at thambisettym@mail.nih.gov  or at Biomedical Research Center, 251 Bayview Blvd, Suite 100, Room 4B317, Baltimore, MD 21224-6825.

PDF position at National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health

National Institute on Aging, Baltimore, MD
A postdoctoral position in musculoskeletal MRI is available, shared between the Longitudinal Studies Branch (Luigi Ferrucci, Chief) and the Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Section (Richard Spencer, Chief) at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health, located in Baltimore, Maryland. The work will center on spectroscopic and imaging studies of muscle in human subjects. Investigation of muscle lipids using proton spectroscopy and muscle bioenergetics using phosphorus spectroscopy are of particular interest. Results will be correlated with a wide range of other biological and functional outcomes to explore the basis and consequences of metabolic and energetic changes that occur with age and with age-associated disease. Other research opportunities may be available depending upon the interests and background of the successful candidate.
The research associated with this position will be performed primarily using our 3T whole-body Philips Achieva MRI system, capable of both proton and heteronuclear spectroscopy. Other MRI instrumentation at the NIA consists of a triple-resonance vertical wide-bore 9.4T Bruker Avance III spectrometer with microimaging and solids capability and a double-resonance Bruker 7T/30 cm Biospec Avance system for preclinical studies.
Requirements:
A background in MR imaging or NMR spectroscopy of muscle or connective tissue is preferred, although applications are also invited from individuals with experience in other areas of biological MRI and NMR. The appointment will be as an IRTA Postdoctoral Fellow for US citizens or as a Visiting Fellow for non-citizens. Accordingly, applicants must have fewer than five years of postdoctoral experience.
To Apply:
Interested individuals should e-mail their CV and the names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses of at least three references to: Dr. Richard Spencer, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Section, NIH/NIA, GRC 4D-06, 5600 Nathan Shock Drive, Baltimore, MD 21224; Tel. 410-558-8226; e-mail: spencer@helix.nih.gov

Research position at NIH Clinical Center

Clinical Center, Bethesda, MD and surrounding area
Our clinical team uses an integrative medicine approach to provide supportive care to patients in intramural research protocols at the NIH Clinical Center (please see http://www.cancer.gov/ncicancerbulletin/032310/page6  for background information). The core of this integrative approach is based on reducing noxious subjective experiences (e.g., pain, nausea) and increasing patients' adaptive responses (e.g., subjective healing, personal change). The research focus will be on development of questionnaires for predictive assessment, progress assessment, and outcome assessment of patients' adaptive responses based on prior research of highly successful adaptation. Final success will be determined by unsolicited routine questionnaire use by our clinical staff - not solely by statistical validation in research. First tasks will include amendment of our active subjective healing protocol for this next phase of research.
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a PhD degree relevant to integrative medicine. Prior experience in assessment instrument development is highly desirable, and credentialing in patient care is strongly preferred. US citizenship is not required but proficiency in English is essential.
To Apply:
This position must be filled by September 30, 2012. To apply, please submit curriculum vitae and three letters of reference via email to:
