IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS
The following work was done by me either individually or a part of team in the Molecular Biology Laboratory, CCSU, Meerut and in Applied Genomics Laboratory, ICRISAT, Hyderabad.
(a) Wheat Genomics:
1. Preparation of whole-genome framework linkage map for grain weight (GW) using a mapping population especially developed for grain weight.
2. Genome-wide QTL interval mapping for GW and other agronomically important traits. The above work has been presented by me in 11th International wheat genetics symposium (IWGS), August 24-29, 2008, Brisbane Australia and is being published in Mol. Breeding Journal.
3. Genetic diversity and population structure analysis of 263 elite Indian bread wheat cultivars using SSR markers.
4. Association mapping for grain weight (GW) and other important quality traits in bread wheat.
5. Genome-wide QTL interval mapping (which included preparation of whole-genome frame work linkage map for the first time) for pre-harvest sprouting tolerance (PHST) using a mapping population specially prepared for PHST.
6. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) for the improvement of GW using some of the above identified QTL for GW
7. Marker-assisted gene pyramiding for pre-harvest sprouting tolerance (PHST) and leaf rust resistance in the background of cv. HD2329
8. Marker-assisted gene pyramiding for grain protein content (GPC) and leaf rust resistance in the background of some elite Indian bread wheat cultivars
The lines improved for GPC-leaf rust resistance and PHST-leaf rust resistance are currently being evaluated in multi-location yield trails at Meerut, Pantnagar and Ludhiana.
(b) Development of Genomics Resources in Jute (second important fibre crop after cotton)
1. Development and use of 54 genomic SSRs (gSSRs) in Jute for the first time in world (Mir et al. 2008).
2. Development of large scale (>1000) SSR markers for the first time in world and their subsequent use in the study of genetic diversity and association mapping (Mir et al. 2009).
The developed SSR markers are being used in genetic mapping, study of genetic diversity, population structure and association mapping of some important fibre traits using a core collection of ~300 jute genotypes.
(c) Legume Genomics (Groundnut and Pigeonpea):
1. QTL interval mapping to identify several small M-QTLs and study digenic epistatic interactions for drought tolerance in Groundnut (Ravi et al. 2010; Published in Theoretical and Applied Genetics).
2. Translational genomics, which involved the use of information gained from model crops (Arabidopsis, and Soybean) in less studied crop “pigeonpea”. In this connection, I have isolated pigeonpea homologues of 8 Arabidopsis/Soybean candidate genes responsible for determinacy and photoperiod sensitivity and have identified some candidate SNPs for determinate/indeterminate growth habit in pigeonpea (Mir et al. 2011; Under preparation).
3. Conversion of above SNPs into CAPS/dCAPS markers followed by their mapping using a bi-parental mapping populations segregating for determinacy in pigeonpea.
4. Comprehensive association analysis for determinacy using whole genome scanning (by using DArT and GoldenGate SNP assays) to identify candidate markers, SNPs and haplotypes responsible for determinacy in pigeonpea.
5. Association mapping for a several other agronomically important traits using ~20 SSRs, >3000 DArT and >600 Illumina GoldenGate SNP markers in Pigeonpea.
