Short Term Course on Essentials of Writing at IIT, Kharagpur

Short Term Course on
Essentials of Writing
Aug. 2 - 8, 2012
Coordinator
Dr. Jayshree Chakraborty
Department of Humanities & Social Sciences
I.I.T., Kharagpur - 721302

Scope of the Course
Writing is not only a graphic representation of speech but it requires a particular arrangement and organization of ideas in the mind of the author before they are put together in the written form in a structured way. Among the four linguistic skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing, writing is supposed to be the most effort-based skill acquired by human beings in their endeavor to communicate. Writing is also difficult because the structure of a written text is highly genre-based, and along with the common essential features like clarity, coherence and cohesiveness of a text, the author has to be particularly aware of the purpose of writing, the specific format of a text, spelling, punctuation and many other grammatical details of a written text in order to achieve efficiency in the art of writing. Although in the present age formal effective writing is most essential in various domains, very few people realize the importance of formal training in this field. The course intends to focus on every aspect of writing
with examples of sample texts. Topics of discussion are arranged in different groups showing the significance of all aspects of writing. Some of the topics to be discussed are:
1. Ingredients of good writing:
(i) Content
(ii) Organization
(iii) Style
2. The genres and grammars of writing
(i) The genre of describing
(ii) The genre of explaining
(iii ) The genre of instructing
(iv) The genre of arguing
(v) The genre of narrating
3. Structural and language features in different types of texts:
(i) Literary texts
(ii) Factual texts
The course will also focus on the technicalities of academic writing which make an academic documentation sound and elegant. Lectures will be delivered by highly proficient faculties of IIT Kharagpur and faculties from other Institutes / Universities with specialization in writing.

Interested persons may apply in the format given herewith along with the registration fee (as may be applicable), paid through a demand draft drawn in favour of `CEP-STC, IIT Kharagpur’ and payable at Kharagpur. The number of seats is limited and thus candidates are advised to register early.

IEEE Medical Imaging Workshop 2012

IEEE Medical Imaging Workshop 2012
19th November - 30th November, 2012
Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering
Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur - 721302
INTRODUCTION
Medical imaging is one of the biggest blessings of science and technology to serve the humanity. The remarkable developments in the field of medical imaging is intensified by the advancement in image processing, pattern recognition and machine intelligence techniques and they have strengthened the recent advancement of medical diagnostics. The key benefits of medical imaging is non-invasive diagnosis. Medical imaging can be used for early detection, where the diseases could be detected at an early stage and thereby the chance of revival is increased for the patients and that comes with less pain and expenditure. Over the years people from various disciplines including doctors, engineers and scientists have strengthened this niche area of medical imaging. Though it’s an exciting area of research, the role of south-east Asian countries and African nations are very insignificant in this domain. However, to make the affordable solution available and acceptable to the masses the active participation of the local researchers is necessary in this region. One of the primary challenges of this domain is that it needs a multi-disciplinary approach. This workshop brings the key personalities/participants to share with you their experiences and recent advances in this field. It provides you the recent trend of industry needs and research and creates an opportunity to develop the local as well as global network. Department of Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering and School of Medical Science & Technology, IIT Kharagpur being actively involved in multidisciplinary research and teaching in medical imaging and instrumentation, image processing and pattern analysis, provides the venue for this workshop.
