POST: Assistant /Associate Professor in Zoology
Department of Agriculture and Ecology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a position as Assistant or Associate professor of Zoology from 1st June 2012 or as soon possible thereafter.
The department conducts teaching and research on plants, animals, soil and microorganisms - from molecules through organisms to populations and anthropogenic ecosystems (http://www.agreco.life.ku.dk/English.aspx). At the Zoology section teaching is conducted within animal diversity, pests and beneficials on animals and plants. The research focus is on: Animal-microbe interactions, applied entomology, insect pathology, and biological control (http://www.agreco.life.ku.dk/English/about/Section/zoology.aspx )
DUTIES
The assistant/associate professor´s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examinations within general zoology with focus on comparative physiology and anatomy in vertebrates plus interaction between vertebrates and their related pest/beneficial organisms. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.
During the period of employment, if hired as assistant professor, the applicant will have to complete educational training.
For the post of associate professor, duties may also include research management, educational guidance and supervision of PhD students and assistant professors as well as participation in scientific assessment committees.
Teaching primarily covers:
· Vertebrate and invertebrate zoology (BSc level for veterinary students, Danish language).
· Domestic animal zoology (BSc level for natural resources and animal science students, Danish language).
· Basic parasitology (MSc level for natural sciences students, English language)
QUALIFICATIONS - SELECTION CRITERIA
Applicants must have an academic degree within biological science (Biologist, veterinarian, etc) with a focus on zoology. Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required:
· Documented scientific qualifications such as a Ph.D. or equivalent in relation to the above subject area.
· Interaction between pests/beneficial organisms and vertebrates.
· Vertebrate biology (form, function and use).
· Use of molecular, immunological and/or other high technology methods.
· Use of population dynamic/epidemiological theory.
· Fluency in English, both written and spoken. As teaching at BSc level is conducted in Danish, employees who do not speak Danish are generally encouraged to acquire knowledge of the language work wise.
Documented teaching experience in English spoken MSc courses.
The period of employment as assistant professor will be limited to 4 years. After a period, the assistant professor, following agreement and individual positive assessment, will transfer to a position as an associate professor.
· In connection with the appointment to the post of associate professor special importance will be attached to the applicant having the professional and personal qualifications stated below:
· Research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved through satisfactory appointment as an assistant professor in relation to the above subject area.
· Documented scientific production at an international level in relation to the above subject area.
· Documentation for fundraising.
· International professional network documented through peer reviewed publications and participation in projects.
· Experience with knowledge- and technology transfer.
· A vision for developing the research area.
If the applicant has had no previous teaching experience through employment as an assistant professor or has not achieved corresponding teaching experience, the appointment will be probationary for 1½ years
For both appointment categories, the assistant/associate professor is also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The post will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
