PostDoctoral Position at THE NATIONAL EYE INSTITUTE, BETHESDA, MD

THE NATIONAL EYE INSTITUTE, BETHESDA, MD
A postdoctoral research position is available immediately in the Molecular Mechanisms Section, Laboratory of Retinal Cell & Molecular Biology, National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), to study the biochemical mechanisms of retinoid metabolism and isomerization in the retina/retinal pigment epithelium. The Molecular Mechanisms Section conducts exciting research into retinoid/carotenoid metabolism, and derangements thereof in blindness, with a long record of achievement in this area. Our focus is on the vitamin A visual cycle that provides the 11-cis retinal chromophore essential for vision (For more information please see http://www.nei.nih.gov/intramural/mol_mech_sec.asp ) .
Our overall goal is a better understanding of vitamin A and its metabolites in vision and in retinal degenerations, and in developing therapies to treat derangements of retinoid metabolism. Current projects include structural studies on the enzymatic mechanism of RPE65/retinol isomerase, analysis of RPE65 knockin mouse models to understand chromophore requirements for photoreceptor viability, and the biochemistry of bisretinoid accumulation in retinal diseases. We have access to a wide range of NEI core facilities, including biological imaging, genetic engineering, visual function, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics resources, etc., and to additional expertise at the NIH Bethesda campus. Training will be provided as required.
Requirements: We are seeking well-trained applicants with a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D., and a strong background in biochemistry or chemistry, and/or molecular biology, and less than 5 years of postdoctoral experience in cognate areas of research. The candidate must be highly motivated and have excellent verbal/written communications and organizational skills. Prior experience in mass spectrometry methods is a plus.
To Apply: Please send CV and bibliography, a summary of research accomplishments, description of research interests and career goals, and the names and addresses of three references to:

Postdoctoral Position at National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Rocky Mountain Labs, Hamilton, MT

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AT NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ALLERGY AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES, ROCKY MOUNTAIN LABS, HAMILTON, MT
A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Innate Immunity and Pathogenesis Unit within the Laboratory of Virology at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories campus of NIAID (Hamilton, MT) to investigate virus-host interactions associated with the innate immune response. The laboratory studies highly pathogenic RNA viruses, including flaviviruses, to uncover host proteins and signaling pathways required for early anti-viral responses. We are also interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms utilized by viruses to suppress innate immunity. Current projects are designed to uncover novel cellular pathways required for 1) sensing RNA virus infection, 2) promoting interferon signaling and 3) virus evasion of innate immunity. Fundamental approaches of the laboratory include molecular, cellular and immunological based techniques as well as virus reverse genetics systems and animal models of pathogenesis. Studies are carried out in BSL2, BSL3 and BSL4 laboratories.
Requirements: Motivated candidates with a strong background in molecular biology and cell biology are encouraged to apply. Experience working in high biological containment laboratories (BSL3 or BSL4), knowledge of innate immunity or experience with reverse genetics systems for recovery of infectious virus would be an advantage. Well-developed oral and written communication skills are essential. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and have less than three years of postdoctoral experience. Compensation will be commensurate with relevant work experience.
To Apply: Email a cover letter indicating research interests and career goals, C.V., list of publications, and names and contact information for three letters of reference to:
Dr. Sonja Best, Innate Immunity and Pathogenesis Unit, Laboratory of Virology, NIAID, NIH, Rocky Mountain Laboratories, 903 S. 4th St., Hamilton MT 59840.

Description of Content
The mission of CECAD Cologne is to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying lifespan regulation and ageing-associated diseases (e.g. ageing-associated impairment of pathogen defence, cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases). CECAD's long-term objective is to develop novel therapeutic interventions. Due to a general increase in life expectancy and an associated increase in the occurrence of ageing-associated diseases, this area is of great scientific and social relevance.

CECAD Cologne focuses on four core research areas:
- Cellular stress signalling and dysfunction during ageing
- Senescence of membranes and age-related impairment of pathogen defence
- Inflammation in ageing-associated diseases
- Metabolic pathways in ageing-associated diseases

The CECAD Graduate School offers a structured and comprehensive PhD training in these areas.
The three-year PhD training starts with an introductory phase on the university, its facilities and the CECAD research groups for a general orientation in the field of ageing. This is followed by short laboratory rotations in three CECAD groups after which the final laboratory is selected by the PhD candidate. The programme also encompasses retreats, lectures and courses in ageing-related subjects, accompanied by soft skills courses. All communication as well as all courses in the CECAD PhD Programme are conducted in English.

The CECAD Graduate School offers a maximum of ten tax-free fellowships each year and charges no tuition fees in an outstanding and highly interdisciplinary research environment with an international atmosphere.

Course Description:
Educational Organisation:
The CECAD PhD Programme starts with an introduction module to provide orientation about the university facilities and services. This includes intensive support in finding accommodation, enrolment at the university, visa processing and orientation in town. Furthermore, it introduces the students to the various CECAD laboratories, investigators and research topics and helps them make contact with fellow students and the research environment. For the entire duration of the PhD programme, the CECAD Graduate School office provides advice and help in all matters relating to the graduate programme and life in Germany. Lab rotations in three different CECAD laboratories offer students the opportunity to obtain detailed information on the science, methods and people in laboratories of interest to them. These rotations serve as a basis for students to select their favoured PhD project laboratory during the introduction module.
A continuous general lecture series will provide students with an overview of all topics covering CECAD research areas, the latest state-of-the-art techniques and novel research results. In addition, students will have the opportunity to attend various training modules varying from lab methodologies and techniques to soft skills. These courses, given by international lecturers, provide profound knowledge in presentation, scientific writing and time management skills required for a successful scientific career.
Every student will be supervised by a thesis committee consisting of experienced CECAD researchers. Annual reports guarantee an optimal supervision of the progress of the projects.
Retreats, international meetings, exchange programmes and journal clubs will complete the programme by giving students the opportunity to interact intensively with the various CECAD researchers and the international research community.
At the end of the three-year programme a written thesis must be submitted, followed by an oral examination, in order to attain the PhD degree.
Forms of Assessment:
Yearly reports and oral presentations. The PhD degree comprises a written thesis and an oral examination.
General promotion / funding of the programme: German Research Foundation
Diploma Supplement: No
Course-related German Language Courses: Yes
Course Objectives
