POST: Research Technician

ICRISAT seeks applications from Indian nationals for the post of Research Technician to be based at Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India. This is a nationally recruited position.

ICRISAT is a non-profit, apolitical, international organization for science-based agricultural development. Established in 1972, it is an Alliance of centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and supported by more than 48 governments, foundations, and development banks. To reduce poverty, enhance crop productivity and food security and to protect the environment, ICRISAT research focuses on farming systems and crop improvement, management and utilization of sorghum, pearl millet, pigeonpea, chickpea, and groundnut in the semi-arid tropics. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

•To supervise on-farm farmer participatory action research trials in different districts of Andhra Pradesh under the Government of AP-ICRISAT Project on Bhoochetana involving rainfed crops;

•To interact with the farmers, researchers and Department of Agriculture officials and act as a liaison person in the district;

•To travel within the district and providing technical support to the Farm Facilitators/Lead Farmers and Farmers in the district;

•To record scientific data, collecting of the information about the farmers and undertaking the crop cutting experiments to record yields in the demonstration plots.

COMPETENCIES:

•Fluent in English and local language (telugu) (both written and spoken);

•Proficiency in Computer skills (Ms- Office, data analysis);

•Should be a good team player and adaptable to working in multicultural team.

REQUIREMENTS:

•Graduate (B.Sc – Agri / B.Sc in Biological Sciences) with related experience;

•Candidate with flair for field work and  group interactions;

•Highly proficient in MS-Office suite, with special reference to Powerpoint and Excel;

•Willingness to travel as per needs of the job;

•Good interpersonal and communication skills with pleasing personality.

This position is a nationally recruited staff position for two years and renewable based on the performance of the incumbent and the Institute's continuing need for the position. The successful candidate provides support to assistant scientist in laboratory in genotyping for introgression of major QTL's for grain yield under drought in elite lines. The candidate shall set up, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, make observations and record observations in laboratory at IRRI.

DUTIES

1. Assist Assistant Scientist in carrying foreground, flanking and background marker genotyping in the laboratory at IRRI on F1, BC1, BC2 populations for identification of desired plants with QTL's in each generation.

2. Assist Assistant Scientist in pyramiding of major QTL's for grain yield under drought in elite background.

3. Extracts DNA, quantify DNA, carry PCR, run and score gels, make other observations and record results.

4. Order supplies to maintain inventories in the laboratory.

5. Perform other major duties that may be assigned from time to time by the drought breeder.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:

•2 years college education

•3 years experience on molecular markers techniques

•Familiarity with use of PCR gels

•Good in oral and written English communication
