POST: Research Assistant [Phenotyping]
SALARY RANGE: £16892 to £21537 pa dependent on experience
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and resourceful Research Assistant to join our exciting programme of research. The day to day activities of the role focus on characterising the mice generated by the Mouse Genetics Project, using a broad range of phenotyping assays and histological techniques designed to identify metabolic, cardiovascular, sensory and behavioural abnormalities. Detailed record keeping is required, as is contribution to data analysis, review and reporting.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
The successful candidates will hold a BSc or have equivalent experience in the biological sciences. Applicants must be team oriented, highly organised with strong attention to detail and possess good communication skills.
IDEAL SKILLS
Experience of handling mice and using databases for data tracking would be advantageous.
OTHER INFORMATION
The Mouse Genetics Project is undertaking an extensive sequence/phenotype driven mutagenesis screen using the resources generated by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute as part of international efforts aimed at mutating over 95 percent of known mouse genes in embryonic stem cells. The mice generated by the programme will be made freely available to the scientific community. All mutant mouse lines generated at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute will be examined using a common battery of phenotyping tools and the data published on the web. The intention is to associate the loss of gene function with disease processes and developmental abnormalities.
This is a fixed-term maternity cover position and will continue until the postholder returns to work after her period of maternity leave. Due to the nature of the contract no minimum or maximum period of employment can be guaranteed. The maximum period of maternity leave available to our employees is 12 months.
