National Workshop in Super Resolution and 4D-confocal Imaging, Umea, Sweden

National Workshop in Super Resolution and 4D-confocal Imaging

Date: 22- 23 November 2011
ORGANISED BY: Biochemical Imaging Centre, Umeå
LOCATION:
Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Umeå University
Welcome to the first workshop in super resolution and live cell imaging organised by the Biochemical Imaging Centre together with UCMR, MIMS and KBC and held in conjunction to the 5th National Infection Biology meeting in Umeå. The workshop aims at providing a thorough and up-to-date theoretical background, and practical exercises in live-cell imaging microscopy, and STochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM) imaging.
The 2-day workshop is composed by seminars the first day. These seminars are covering the latest in advanced imaging techniques, and held by international and reputed scientists in the field. Seminars are open for public. During the second day, experienced staff from the centre and from Nikon will have demonstrations and provide instructions in practical exercises at the microscopes. Participation in the second day will be limited to 12.
Participation in the practical part of the workshop is primarily thought for research scientists, postdoctoral trainees and graduate students that already have a general understanding and experience of microscopy. Therefore selection of participants will be based on previous experience and project relevance.
The practical exercises will be on the Nikon A1R system capable of; capturing confocal images with full spectral resolution in high-speed and high-resolution, TIRF imaging FRET and FRAP experiments. In combination with live cell incubation and micromanipulation, the system is rapid enough to allow real-time imaging of dynamic cellular and molecular processes in 3D. The system is also equipped with N-STORM. STochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM) reconstructs a super resolution fluorescent image with a resolution of 10 times greater than conventional microscopes.

Post-Doc position at MIMS, Umeå University, Sweden

Post-Doc position in Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics and MIMS Umeå University, Sweden
TOPIC: Visualization of endocytic carrier formation using advanced microscopy techniques
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The proposed research builds on previous biochemical and structural characterization of proteins involved in endocytosis, and further elaborates on the sequential recruitment of proteins, and dynamics of membrane remodelling phenomena. This project focuses on developing fluorescent tools and reagents for visualizing the dynamics and specificity of endocytic carrier formation using STORM and four-dimensional fluorescent microscopy.
For more details please contact:
 Dr. Richard Lundmark

METHODS:
This study make use of advanced fluorescent live cell imaging using a Nikon A1R system, fully operational for TIRF and FRAP/FRET microscopy and equipped with micromanipulators for injection into individual cells. In addition the microscope system is combined with a STORM-unit for ultra resolution microscopy. Further techniques involve generation of stable cell lines, cell culture, and generation of fluorescent reagents, protein biochemistry, and standard cell /molecular biology techniques.
POSITION:
The position is available for the initial 2 years as a tax-exempt fellowship with a possibility of extension.
RELEVANT PUBLICATIONS:
Howes M, et al. Journal of Cell Biology, 2010. Lundmark R, et al. Current Biology 2008. Daumke O, et al. Nature 2007

The department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics is located within the Chemical Biological Centre at Umeå University and provides well- equipped common facilities and excellent platforms for imaging and protein biochemistry in a creative, inspiring and highly interactive environment.
APPLICATION DETAILS FOR POST-DOC FELLOWSHIP:
We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who have a genuine interest in, and experience from, imaging techniques. The applicant should have received or be about to receive a Ph.D. in cell/molecular biology or a related discipline. Prior experience of fluorescent microscopy in active research lab will be an added advantage as well as experience of developing and handling novel fluorescent tools for imaging. The successful candidate is expected to design and execute his or her project independently but also work in close collaboration with the other members of the team.
