Lectures will alternate with hands-on assignments using the DSSAT crop models and software package. Ample time will r their use.

1. Importance of soil carbon for carbon production in the tropics
2. Global warming and climate change.
3. Soil as potential substrate to mitigate enhanced atmospheric CO2.
4. Carbon capture and storage mechanism.
5. Role of microbial biomass in carbon sequestration.
6. Soil inorganic carbon sequestration.
7. Carbon sequestration in forest soils.
8. Carbon stocks and C-modeling for Indian soils.
9. Protocol on analysis of carbon by CN analyzer.
10. World data base on soil carbon.
11. Introduction and details of carbon models and methods available for carbon management research including Century, Roth-C, IPCC, Epic-Century and GEFSOC models.
12. SOTER data base requirement for carbon modelling.
13. Introduction to carbon trading and protocols to formulate

COURSE OVERVIEW:
Carbon content in the soil in the tropics is directly related to soil fertility and crop productivity. Maintenance of carbon in the soil in the tropical systems is a challenging task. Carbon sequestration is a win-win strategy for mitigating the impacts of climate change as well as for increasing the productivity and improving the livelihoods. This program will describe the importance of soil carbon and its relationship with global warming and climate change. Methods of measuring carbon sequestration (organic and inorganic) as well as estimating the carbon stocks in the soils under different management practices will discussed.
Participants will be introduced to models and methods for carbon management research like Century, Roth-C etc. as well as data requirement for carbon modeling. Carbon trading and protocols to formulate clean development mechanism projects will also be discussed.

A Certificate of Completion will be provided upon conclusion of the course. Enrollment is limited to 20 registrants

(1) Scientists/Researchers engaged in soil carbon management research and in Carbon Trading Policy formulation and also scientists who wish to pursue research in these aspects.
(2) Working scientists in ICAR Research Institutes, State Agricultural Universities and other Traditional Universities and National Institutes
(3) Age below 50 years

FACILITIES
The course organizers will provide shared accommodation at ICRISAT campus. It includes one copy of a CD-ROM with lecture notes, PowerPoint slides (pdf), sample exercises and the use of computers in the training room. Meals and refreshments will be provided including on-campus accommodation (twin sharing in flats or single in dormitory).
Fee does not include travel costs to and from ICRISAT.
