FIXED-TERM: Aug 1, 2012 -
EMPLOYER: Independent institutes, Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM)
The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM, http://www.fimm.fi/ ) was established in 2007 as a partner institution of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory ( www.embl.org ) together with Nordic nodes for molecular medicine in Norway (NCMM) and Sweden (MIMS). FIMM is a joint venture of the University of Helsinki, the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS), the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. FIMM laboratories are located in a brand new state-of-the-art Biomedicum Helsinki 2 research building on the Meilahti medical campus in Helsinki.
FIMM is currently seeking outstanding candidates for positions of Doctoral Students in Molecular Medicine as part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine and HBDP-FIMM Doctoral Program starting in August 2012.
DESCRIPTION: FIMM is a multi-disciplinary research institute combining high-quality science with state-of-the-art technologies and strives toward building a bridge from biomedical research and discovery to medical applications. FIMM works together with the Helsinki Biomedical Doctoral Program (HBDP-FIMM) to provide excellent research training and courses aiming at a PhD degree at the University of Helsinki. As part of an international joint call of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, we currently have openings for PhD students who show outstanding potential to become independent researchers and who will significantly benefit from the institute’s four-year program. Applications are sought in the areas of: bioinformatics, cancer-related chemical biology, cancer systems biology, computational systems biology, human disease genomics, medical systems virology, mouse cancer genetics, and mouse models of lung cancer.
QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE: Candidates should have a relevant academic degree (MSc, MD or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biotechnology, genetics, medicine, information science or other related fields, obtained before the starting date. The successful candidate is expected to have good problem solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills. In addition, the candidate should be fluent in English, have good interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, and be able to work independently as well as within an international team. A demonstrated interest in molecular medicine is also advantageous.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS: Application should be written in English and include a cover letter, CV or resume, and a one-page statement of motivation and research interests that describes specifically how the candidate would integrate into the FIMM research groups. The application package should demonstrate that the applicant has potential to become an independent researcher and will significantly benefit from the institute’s four-year program. Applications should be submitted as a single .pdf file online at http://www.fimm.fi/en/open_positions/ no later than February 17, 2012, at 15.45. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be processed or considered.
The top candidates will be invited for an interview with an international evaluation committee. The selected candidates will be offered an initial contract for one year during which time students will engage in diverse training through research group rotations. Upon a successful review and selection of a research group, the initial contract will be extended for an additional four-year period and the candidates will begin training within the HBDP.
