Scientist(Plant Breeding & Seed Production) at ICRISAT, Patancheru, Hyderabad

INTERNATIONAL CROP RESEARCH INSTITTE FOR SEMI ARID TROPICS
POST: Regional Scientist-Plant Breeding & Seed Production
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Contribute to collaborative groundnut breeding, research and capacity building activities in the framework of ICRISAT’s overall project agenda
•Designing and implementing groundnut trials on-farm in close collaboration with public sector partners (national and international).
•Work with public and private sector partners to support seed production (breeder, basic, and certified) of disease and drought resistant groundnuts varieties
•Technical backstopping and capacity strengthening of public sector partners in participatory variety selection.
•Assist in the design and implementation of alternate seed system dissemination plans, including line maintenance, production of breeders, and basic seed of improved and released groundnuts varieties with relevant public and private sector institutions for increased certified seed production, and field-based activities for promotion and enhanced adoption by the target communities.
Work with other ICRISAT staff to improve the capacity (including development of training modules on seed production, and conduct training in seed business management, seed multiplication, seed marketing, quality assurance, etc.) of public and private sector partners in the seed systems (including small- and medium-sized seed companies, community-based and non-governmental organizations) to empower them to produce and distribute seed (breeder, basic, and certified).
DESIRED CANDIDATE’S PROFILE:
•PhD degree in plant breeding or closely related field with knowledge of experimental design, management of field trials, field breeding operations, and data analysis.
•Minimum 3 years of experience in public or private sector breeding programs.
•Aptitude for field-based crop research.
•Excellent computer skills and experience with SAS, GENSTAT, or other statistical software.
•A record of publications in peer reviewed journals of repute
•Proficiency in spoken and written English, with an ability to communicate information in a cogent and informative manner.
•Strong self-motivation and innovative skills, coupled with interest in international agricultural research and development
•Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural partnerships.
•Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work under pressure
•Good partnership building and networking experience with the public and private sectors.
THE REWARD
This is a regional position in the Special Project Scientist Cadre of ICRISAT.  The position is initially for a period of two years and renewable depending on performance of the incumbent and funding availability. ICRISAT offers an attractive and competitive salary and benefits package payable in US dollars.
