ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Medical physics is the science of human health and radiation exposure. Ionizing radiation has been beneficial to human beings in areas ranging from Cancer diagnosis and therapy to scientific research to generating electrical power. Cancer is currently the cause of 12% of deaths worldwide. Of the 10 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year, 4.7 million are in the more developed countries and nearly 5.5 million in the less developed countries. The number of cancer cases in India is increasing due to increasing population, increase in the proportion of older people and changing patterns of lifestyles. Based on the cancer registry data it is estimated that there will be about 800,000 new cancer cases in India every year. At any given point there is likely to be 3 times this load that about 240,000 cases. About two thirds of them need some form of radiation therapy. Today there are more than 800 medical physicists in India. Even though the annual growth rate in the number of medical physicists is reported to be the highest in India, the total number is inadequate for the size of the population. While India has less than one medical physicist per millions population, it is from 5 to 20 in developed countries. This also reflects upon the meager facilities for X-ray diagnosis and radiation therapy of cancer in India. The challenge for academic radiology in India is also going to be the problem of educating and training a sufficient number of medical physicists, while coping with increasingly busy clinical practices. Also the development of modern health technology makes new applications safer than before as their inappropriate use can lead to unnecessary or unintended radiation doses, causing potential health hazards for patients, staff as well as public. Under these circumstances, this workshop provides a platform to exchange knowledge, share experience and discuss challenges and solutions to existing problems known in the field of Medical Physics.
