POST: Scientist/Senior Scientist-Crop Livestock
ICRISAT is seeking applications from a dynamic and highly
innovative scientist to undertake crop-livestock systems and natural resource
management who has a global research perspective. The Scientist-Crop Livestock
(Internationally Recruited Staff) will be based at ICRISAT Headquarters near
Greater Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, working within the Research Program
on Resilient Dryland Systems (RDS).
This is a joint position supported by ICRISAT and ILRI
(International Livestock Research institute). ICRISAT and ILRI are non-profit,
non-political organizations that conduct agricultural research for development
in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa with a wide array of partners throughout the
world. Covering 6.5 million square kilometers of land in 55 countries, the
semi-arid tropics is home to over 2 billion people, with 650 million of these
the poorest of the poor. ICRISAT, ILRI and its partners help empower those
living in the semi-arid tropics, especially smallholder farmers, to overcome
poverty, hunger, malnutrition and a degraded environment through more efficient
and profitable agriculture. ICRISAT and ILRI belong to the Consortium of Centers
supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
(CGIAR). The position will be based in CGIAR Research Program (CRP) 1.1 on
‘Dryland Systems: Integrated Agricultural Production Systems for the Poor and
vulnerable in Dry Areas’, but will also contribute to other CRPs.
The Job:
·
Provide leadership in
research on integrated crop-livestock systems in South Asia and contribute to
global crop-livestock systems research. The Scientist will focus on
understanding the system dynamics of livelihoods, water and nutrients under
current and projected changes due to climate, demography etc.

Integrate into
interdisciplinary teams from ICRISAT, ILRI and other CGIAR Centers, and with
National Agricultural Research Institutes and development partners.
·
Contribute to ICRISAT
and ILRI’s resource mobilization efforts through research proposals writing and
strengthening of partners’ capacities, including co-supervision of postgraduate
thesis research.
The Person:
·
PhD degree in natural
resource management or ecology, livestock & pastoral systems or related
agricultural discipline with 5 to 10 years’ experience in systems related
research.

Proven ability to think
strategically about research for development.
·
Innovative, energetic
individual with demonstrated contributions to the field of agriculture and
committed to seeing measurable impacts at farm level. Strong statistical
skills, knowledge of computer applications and software for data management and
analysis.
·
Excellent in English
(both spoken and written).
·
Good publication record,
as evidenced by research papers in refereed journals.
·
Proven ability in
attracting project funding.
·
Experience in working
with a wide range of stakeholders and interest to work in interdisciplinary
team
The Reward:
This is an internationally recruited staff position with an attractive and competitive salary and benefits package payable in US dollars. The position is initially for three years, and extendable depending on performance of the incumbent and funding availability. An attractive compensation will be offered for the right candidate.
