Doctoral Programme
The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) is a unique Indian institution conducting multidisciplinary research in areas that bridge the gap between the natural and engineering sciences, social sciences, humanities and the arts. A limited number of research scholarships are available in the Institute for bright and committed postgraduate students interested in pursuing independent research across disciplines towards a doctoral degree.
We are admitting exceptional students interested in multidisciplinary research in the areas represented at NIAS, especially in the following areas for the year 2012–2013:
• Agroecology
• Biosecurity
• Archaeology, Archaeological Science and Art History
• Conflict Studies – Identity Politics
• Consciousness, Self and Well-being Studies
• Economic and Social Issues
• Energy and Climate Policy
• International Strategic and Security Studies
• Urban Studies

ELIGIBILITY
The scholarships are open to those who have completed/are completing a Master’s/M.Phil. degree in any relevant subject in natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, social sciences, humanities or the arts, and with a consistently proven academic record (minimum 55% marks). Some research and/or field experience in the concerned areas may be preferred, but is not essential. Candidates who have passed the NET/SET examinations or qualified for JRF/DST/CSIR/ICSSR fellowships will be preferred.
FELLOWSHIP
Candidates admitted to the NIAS Doctoral Programme will be entitled to fellowships, which will be available for a period of four years on a yearly renewable basis. The fellowship amount is fixed at Rs 16,000 per month for the first two years and Rs 18,000 per month from the third year, with an additional 30% per month as House Rent Allowance. Limited hostel seats are available on campus.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications should be made on plain paper, including a curriculum vitae, copies of mark sheets and degree certificates (to be verified at the time of interview) and a clear statement of purpose detailing the research interests of the candidate and explaining why she/he would like to join NIAS. Explicit mention must be made of the research areas for which the application is being sent.

IIITM-K Summer School on Environmental Informatics
Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) is pleased to announce its Summer School on Environmental Informatics from 9 to 13 April 2012.
This programme provides an occasion for intensive training in the different facets of the interdisciplinary subject and is targeted at postgraduate, doctoral, postdoctoral researchers and working professionals in the field of ecology, environmental science and allied disciplines.
Lecture sessions will be complemented by hands-on training to reinforce the contents. List of topics that will be covered are as below:
1. Environmental informatics: the need, relevance and directions.
2. The natural capital.
3. Carrying capacity.
4. Understanding global change: A thermodynamic perspective.
5. Numerical techniques for environmental research (Statistical – R package).
6. Numerical techniques for environmental research (Mathematical – Matlab).

Short-Term Training Course (STTC) on ‘Bioprocessing in Biotechnology’
The Department of Biotechnology, Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT), Coimbatore, is organizing a DBT-sponsored short-term training course (STTC) for teachers involved in teaching life sciences and biotechnology for 14 days from 26 April to 9 May 2012. The course consists of lectures by Guest Faculty from premier research institutions/universities followed by practical/hands-on training sessions in ratio of 30 : 70. Candidates holding regular positions in private or govt-aided or govt colleges or university colleges or research institutions are eligible to apply. The application has to be sponsored by the Head of the colleges/institutions/universities. However, 25% of the teachers from govt-aided or govt colleges or university colleges will be paid TA as per institutional rules.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. (Microbiology/Biochemistry/Biotechnology) candidates with two or more years of relevant post doctoral experience.
SCOPE OF WORK: The selected candidate will be expected to work on microalgae isolation,identification and lipid profiling of micro-algae for bio-diesel production, toxicity testing on human/animal cell lines, chemical and biological process development for de-toxification of Jatropha de-oiled cake, fermentation of sugars generated from lingo-cellulosic wastes and mutagenesis of cellulose producing fungal strains.
REQUIREMENTS: The interested candidates should be willing to work across the board on various ongoing projects in the division. The technologies developed are further taken up for pilot plant study leading to commercialization. Thus a person with multi-disciplinary interests will be preferred. The candidate will be expected to conceive and write projects to be submitted to various funding agencies.
The selected candidate may also guide Master’s and Ph.D. Scholars.
COMPENSATION: Rs 3 to 6 lakhs per annum.

Position for JRF in DAE-BRNS Project (No. 2011/37C/50/BRNS/2271)
Walk-in-interview will be conducted in the office of Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET), on 21 March 2012 at 11.00 am to select one JRF in DAE-BRNS sponsored research project entitled ‘Design and Synthesis of Nanoparticle-Liposomal Smart Hybrids for Targeted and Controlled Release of Drugs’ sanctioned to Dr Rama Ranjan Bhattacharjee. The tenure of the appointment will be coterminous with the duration of the project (three years), may be upgraded to SRF for third year.
The selected candidate will be paid fellowship of Rs 16,000 per month for first two years. The candidate must have Master’s degree in Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology with at least 55% marks in the subject. NET/LS/GATE qualified candidates will be preferred.
