Biotechnology Entrepreneurship Student Teams

BEST-India BEST-India (Biotechnology Entrepreneurship Student Teams) is aimed at encouraging young postgraduate and doctoral students in developing biotechnology entrepreneurship and exposing them to issues involved in commercialization of bio-science.
METHODOLOGY: A nationwide ‘Call for Proposals’ in the area of life sciences that has commercialization potentialwill be announced through various communication media.
Students have to form a team comprising of 5 team members, identify a team leader and a faculty member/mentor as a Guide. The Guide is optional and not a part of the team.
Each team will submit a Concept Note based on which a Panel will screen the applications and shortlist 20 teams. These 20 teams will attend a fully paid for high quality Entrepreneurship Workshop that will familiarize them on matters related to starting a business venture like Business Plans, IP & Patenting Strategies, Raising Finance, Business Strategies, HR Practices and Communication Skills.
At the end of the Workshop, each team will develop a business plan based on their Concept and learning from the Workshop and make a ten minute power point presentation to the Jury. The Jury will evaluate and critique each of the business plans and identify 3 winning teams.
The 3 Winning teams will be awarded Prize money of Rs.500,000/-, Rs. 300,000/- and Rs. 200,000/ respectively.
The winning teams will also begiven an opportunity to attend and present their business plans at ABLE’s Annual BioInvest Conference. BioInvest is ABLE’s flagship conference that brings together on one platform Life Science Companies, Institutional Investors and Investment Bankers to explore opportunities for investment.
ELIGIBILITY:
The scheme is sponsored by The Department of Biotechnology, (www.dbtindia.nic.in) Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and managed and administered by Association of Biotechnology Led Enterprises, ABLE – India. (http://www.ableindia.org/)
Applicants must be students who are currently pursuing their masters (including 5 year integrated post graduate degree), doctoral degree, BE or B Tech courses or four year professional courses in the area of life sciences (bioscience/ biotechnology and/or related subjects) from Indian universities / Institutes.
The applicants should form a team of 5 students and nominate a team leader. The individual team members may or may not be from the same Institute / University. One third of the team members can be from disciplines other than life sciences.
Each team will submit only one entry. A participant can be a member of only one team.

Core biotechnology disciplines under which Concept Notes will be invited include Agriculture, Aquaculture, Alternate Energy / Bio-energy, Biological Applications, Bioprocess Engineering, Drug discovery & Development, Environment, Food, Human Resource Development, Medical, Medical Diagnostics, Medical devices, Medical Therapeutics, Nanobiology / Nanobiotechnology, and Vaccines.
The proposals could be either for product, service or an application.
Important: The proposals will be screened stringently for plagiarism. If plagiarism is found at any given stage of the programme, the team will be debarred & the head of the institution will be notified.
JURY
A panel of judges will screen the applications. The Jury consists of eminent persons from academia, industry and investment sector.
SCREENING & JURY EVALUATION
The Concept Notes will be screened for:
Innovativeness of the idea
Techno economic feasibility and scalability of the idea
Commercialization & Market potential of the idea
Clarity of communication
Twenty teams that score the highest points will be selected to attend the Entrepreneurship Development  Workshop.

Essential Qualifications
Second class Masters Degree with minimum 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST/PH) or M.Phil. in biological sciences / chemistry or related subjects. The candidates possessing first class B.Tech degree or MBBS degree are also eligible to be appointed as project fellows.
Knowledge of basic instruments commonly used in biological research and computer application is desirable.
The candidate to be appointed as project fellows should be below the age of 40 years at the time of appointment.
Desirable Qualifications:
1.Experience in Analytical Separation like HPLC and nano LC
2. Experience in Mass Spectrometry and allied mass analysis platforms
3.Experience in Bacterial Biofilms, Microbiology and Flow Cells.
The appointment of the Project Fellow will be made with the consolidated salary of Rs. 8000/- per month (consolidated) according to the rules & regulations of the UGC-SAP. The initial appointment will be for one year and will be annually extended based on satisfactory performance of the fellow.

‘Dr. Prafulla K. Pani research fellowship’ is a short term fellowship of Rs. 8,000 per month (consolidated) and is available for completing a research-based dissertation, thesis or report to be carried out at the Special Centre for Molecular Medicine (SCMM).
Essential qualifications & Experience:
  1. MBBS/BVSc or M.Sc. (First class) with one year working experience in BSL-I microbiology laboratory/ handling microbes and mass spectrometry based analysis of metabolites for research and diagnostics.
  2. Experience of handling analytical instruments and/or maintaining and handling molecular and cell biology laboratory instruments. Should have good communication and inter -personal skills.
  3. Working knowledge of computer is essential.
Desired Experience:
  1. Working under hospital conditions and/or handling clinical samples.
