DURATION OF THE PROJECT: Three years

PROPOSED THEME: Principles and Practices of Animal Taxonomy with special reference to Insects
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
A one week National Level Hands-on Training Workshop on Principles and Practices of Animal Taxonomy with special reference to Insects is being organized by Zoological Survey of India, Western Ghat Regional Centre, Calicut, Kerala. The one week residential workshop is intended to educate and popularize Animal Taxonomy – the science of discovering, naming and classifying animals. To demonstrate and communicate the underlying concepts in taxonomy, the workshop will focus on standard techniques and procedures practiced in the science of Entomology.
The subject area specialists of repute will deliver presentations/lectures and also impart hands-on training on collection, preservation, curation and identification techniques, with regard to significant insect groups like Lepidoptera (butterflies & moths), Odonata (dragon flies & damselflies), Mantodea (Praying mantids), Hymenoptera (ants, bees and wasps), Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (flies), Orthoptera (Grass-hoppers) and Aquatic insects (including Hemiptera). A one- day field visit will be organized to Vanaparvam Biodiversity Conservation Park, Kakkavayal, Calicut, to get acquainted with the procedures and techniques related to inventorying insects. Modern trends in insect taxonomy like molecular systematics will also be dealt with.
The medium of instructions will be English.
BROAD OBJECTIVES
The workshop aims
· To introduce the Principles, Practices and Scope of Animal Taxonomy
· To Impart practical/hands-on training in standard Taxonomic Procedures
· To develop basic skills in Identifying the Insect fauna
TARGET GROUPS:
Post graduates and young researchers in the field of Zoology, Wildlife Biology and Life Sciences.
VENUE AND DATES
The workshop will be conducted at Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Western Ghat Regional Centre (WGRC), Calicut-6, Kerala, from 27th February – March 3rd , 2012.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA*:
1. AGE: Applicants should be below 35 years as on 1.1. 2012.
2. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Post Graduates in Zoology, Wildlife Biology and Life Sciences.
At least one year research experience desirable
*Ph. D holders are not encouraged to apply.
A total of 25 participants will be selected on all-India basis, according to the above criteria. Selected participants will be asked to submit copies of their Certificates.
TRAVEL, BOARDING AND LODGING FOR THE PARTICIPANTS
The participants will be provided a second class to and fro fare by train, from the place of their residence in India to the workshop venue, on producing valid travel documents. Free dormitory accommodation (separate for men and women) will be provided to all participants.

Projects in lab involve functional and/or perfusion MRI scans in human subjects - either patients or healthy subjects. The fellow may need to spend part of his/her time in a hospital setting, interviewing subjects and collecting data. Boldness, effective communication skills and ability to independently learn new software are required. Basic grasp of concepts of programming also required.
This would be a perfect position for an MBBS graduate interested in learning to do neuroscientific/clinical research, or looking to add research experience to his/her resume prior to applying for a residency/graduate school.

Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem), an autonomous Institute established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, at Bangalore, invites applications from suitable candidates for a Research Scientist/Scientific Manager to establish and manage a Stem Cell Engineering Facility (SCEF).
POST: Scientific Manager: Stem Cell Engineering Facility
DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of Prof. J. Dhawan, inStem and Collaborative Scientific Chair Prof. B.Burgering, University Medical Center Utrecht, Netherlands, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the newly developed mammalian Stem Cell Engineering Facility (SCEF). Specifically, we are looking for an experienced person to implement state-of-the-art instrumentation and methodology to apply lentiviral expression systems for over-expression and shRNA-mediated knockdown in mouse and human stem cells. The person will be expected to travel between Utrecht and inStem as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Management and supervision of all the activities performed in the SCEF and in consultation with Prof Dhawan and Burgering developing a research line on stem cell quiescence or related subject.
• Maintaining a large library of mouse and human shRNA lentiviral constructs.
• Generating and expressing tagged full length expression constructs in lentiviruses for a variety of human and mouse proteins –mostly transcription factors and chromatin modulators.
• Designing and optimizing cellular assays for testing function of overexpression/knockdown in stem cells.
• Implementing standard protocols and procedures to be followed by staff of the SCEF,including biosafety for lentiviral production.
• Assisting in the design and implementation of genome-wide analysis of engineered stem cells.
• Training and assisting researchers to perform over expression and knockdowns in stem cells using lentivirus constructs
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ph.D. Degree in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genomics or equivalent.
• Postdoctoral experience preferred, with experience in lentiviral methods.
• Familiarity with mammalian stem cell isolation, culture, functional analysis.
• Familiarity with in vivo analysis of stem cells using FACS, histology
• Applicants can be of any nationality
LANGUAGES:
• English both spoken and written is essential.
START DATE: December 1, 2011 or later.
TENURE: This position is funded by inStem and is initially for three years, extendable to five based on requirements and performance.

DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of Prof. S. The person will be expected to travel between UCLA and inStem as needed.

• Mastering over expression utilizing heterologous platforms including yeast and mammalian cells.
• Designing and optimizing screening assays.
• Implementing standard protocols and procedures to be followed by staff of the MPEF.
• Assisting in the design, optimization and implementation of membrane protein expression.
• Training and assisting researchers to use the instrumentation and perform over expression and isolation of membrane proteins.
• Management and supervision of all the activities performed in the MPEF.

Postdoctoral position at Mercer's lab at inStem-NCBS Cardiomyopathy Laboratory
inStem-NCBS Cardiomyopathy Laboratory
inStem (http://instem.res.in), is a new institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine located at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS, www.ncbs.res.in) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bangalore, India. InStem-NCBS has set up an international laboratory as the headquarters for a multinational consortium for the study of inherited cardiomyopathies. This Cardiomyopathy Laboratory is led by Dr. John Mercer (McLaughlin Research Institute), in collaboration with Dr. K. VijayRaghavan (inStem, NCBS).
Dr. James A. Spudich (Stanford University School of Medicine) leads the consortium. Drs. Mercer and Spudich are visiting professors at inStem and NCBS.
A postdoctoral position is currently available for a talented and driven candidate with interests in biochemistry, biophysics, and regenerative medicine. Current projects include the study of biochemical and biophysical alterations in mutant sarcomeric proteins, as well as contractility in single cardiomyocytes obtained from mouse models and derived from human iPS and ES cells. The successful applicant will be headquartered in Bangalore, but will spend significant time at Stanford and other laboratories in the consortium, including the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) at Kyoto University.
