Description of Content:

This study programme focuses on the foundations and the evolution of non-human and human primate behaviour. Research projects are undertaken in the fields of psychology, anthropology and evolutionary biology, with an emphasis on comparative and interdisciplinary approaches. Major topics are the evolution of social behaviour, group behaviour and group coordination, developmental psychology, as well as the cognitive and physiological foundations of behaviour. The programme is affiliated with the Courant Research Centre for the Evolution of Social Behaviour, which is funded by the German Excellence Initiative.

Educational Organization: Students collect 20 ECTS credits during their three years of research on their PhD project. Credits must be obtained for involvement in teaching, conference visits, attendance at lecture series and participation in colloquia, etc.

Language Requirements: Applicants whose native language is not English are asked to submit proof of proficiency in English (e.g. TOEFL: computer-based at least 220 points, paper-based at least 550 points; IELTS: band 7). Proven higher education in English or a reasonably long stay in an English-speaking country may also be accepted.

Academic requirements: Master's degree in one of the relevant areas (biology, zoology, psychology, etc.). A fast-track option for students enrolled in the Göttingen DNB programme (Master's Programme in Developmental, Neural and Behavioural Biology) is in preparation.

Post Doctoral Position (C. ELEGANS FERTILIZATION AND EARLY DEVELOPMENT) at National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Bethesda

The Laboratory of Biochemistry and Genetics (LBG) is recruiting a post-doctoral position to study the regulation of fertilization in C. elegans. We use genetics, molecular and cell biological approaches to identify factors that regulate oocyte maturation, fertilization, and the accurate segregation of chromosomes during the meiotic divisions. We are also interested in paternal factors that activate embryonic development upon fertilization. We also are investigating the functions of the protein phosphatase 5 gene in C. elegans in germline and embryonic development.

All projects utilize methodologies in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and biochemistry/proteomics and primarily employ the nematode C. elegans as a model system.

Requirements:

A strong background in molecular biology, genetics, or biochemistry is desired. Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a comparable field.
