The Ph.D. Programme in “Agrobiosciences” is a three-year program characterized by an interdisciplinary connotation and designed for highly qualified and motivated students who wish to acquire the research and analytical skills of the international scientific community and to acquire the skills of professional academic research to work in government agencies, financial institutions, international agencies, private companies in economics. The Ph.D. Programme in “Agrobiosciences” consists in the following curricula:

- Genomics and Crop Science (Plant Biotechnology; Plant Genetics; Plant Physiology; Plant Genomics; Crop Sciences; Advanced technologies in Horticulture; Crop production and quality).
- Agriculture, Environment and Landscape (agroecology, organic, integrated or low-input agriculture, functional biodiversity in agroecosystems, landscape agronomy, multicriteria analysis of food and non food cropping systems, agri-environmental analysis of agricultural systems, multifunctional agriculture, agriculture-territory-landscape interactions).

 Admission Requirements
- possession of a Master of Science (MSc.) or Master of Arts (MA) Degree (or equivalent);
- to be under 35 years of age on October 31, 2011; as an exception, older than 35 may be admitted by the Examination Committee;
- possession of a certificate specifying an intermediate level (or above) of English (as per art. 2 par. 3 of the Call)

Positions and grants
2 positions supported by a grant (amounting to € 14.500 per year + free meals at school’s canteen + Campus facilities);
- the School reserves the possibility of accepting a maximum 2 additional students without a grant or other forms of financial support.

Job Description:

Within the large collaborative FP7 project EDENext (WP Tick-borne diseases), the student will conduct a sub-project on the identification and molecular characterisation of the genetic variability of a series of pathogens found within questing, engorged ticks and reservoir hosts.

Questing, feeding ticks and biological samples collected from a variety of reservoirs hosts collected across Trentino and other EDENext sampling sites, will be sampled and analysed using several types of appropriate molecular markers. The aim of the research is to understand the

ecological relationships of tick borne pathogens in different habitats of natural foci; to gain insight into the tick pathogen community structure and variability in relation to host community composition and tick genetic variability providing estimates for parameters critical for the development of predictive models of tick-borne disease risk. The student will have the opportunity to propose innovative tools and spend at least 6 months in an external laboratory.

Contract type and length: The Fellowship is for three years (36 months) with a possible extension of one year. Requirement for the grant is the admission to a PhD school individuated by FEM within the first year of the fellowship. Reasonable registration costs for the PhD course will be covered by FEM.

IT knowledge: Relevant knowledge of standard word processing and database software, as well as sequence editing packages and genetics/evolution softwares.

Eligibility and Experience required:

Laurea/Master’s in Biology, Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, Biotechnology, Veterinary Medicine or equivalent.

At least 6 months laboratory experience in animal DNA sequencing, molecular pathogen detection, data analysis and interpretation.

Scholarships of the University of Münster for Doctoral Students in their Last Year of PhD Research

The University of Münster allocates scholarships and travel grants to promote outstanding young researchers in their last year of PhD research. The number of scholarships and travel grants depends on the funds available for the promotion of doctoral research as determined by the university's budget plan. If the candidates  fulfill the requirements according to the guidelines of July 28, 2011 (not yet in English), scholarships may be granted for a maximum of the final twelve months of their doctoral research. In order to be eligible for funding, candidates need to be enrolled as a doctoral student at the University of Münster. Their supervisor needs to be a professor or a reader who has qualified as professor (Privatdozent) at the University of Münster. Candidate  must have started their doctoral studies and  they need to demonstrate that they will be able to finish their studies with outstanding results within the duration of their scholarship.

The scholarship grant amounts to € 1.000 per month.

The Felix Scholarship, 2012

The Felix Scholarship: Scholarship for students from developing country

About the scholarship:

"Felix" translated from Latin means: happy, good omen, successful, favorable. The Felix Scholarship was the dream of a generous individual who wished to remain anonymous and is referred to as "the Founder".

It was the Founder's wish that the scholarships would allow gifted underprivileged students the chance of furthering their education by attending a university in the UK.  After consultation with various agencies, it was decided that scholarships would be offered at three universities - the University of Oxford, the University of Reading and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), part of the University of London.  The Scholarships are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic merit and financial need.

The original country of choice for the recipients of the scholarships was India for several reasons: it has an excellent and broad pool of very fine educational establishments; it offers an excellent infrastructure to facilitate the selection of the Felix scholars; it has a very high regard for higher education and the English language, both written and spoken; and English is the second language at the majority of the higher education establishments.

However, it was the Founder's intention that whilst India should be the principal beneficiary it should not be the sole beneficiary and, since 2001, a limited number of Felix scholarships have been awarded to gifted underprivileged students from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Belarus, Peru, Czech Republic, Kenya, Ghana, Turkey, South Africa, Egypt, Nepal and Hungary.

The Founder also hoped that these gifted individuals would harbour the spirit of academic pursuit, excel in extra-curricular activities, have the potential for leadership and be citizens of sound character.  The opportunities available via the scholarships would stimulate the students by exposing them to cultures, experiences and friendships that they would not otherwise have had the chance to sample.  This in turn would endow them with skills and visions enabling them, when returning to their country of origin, to contribute to the culture and welfare of their home communities.  Students are required to be pursuing studies in subjects that would be of benefit to their country of origin and they should have a desire to return to their own country once their studies are complete.

The first six scholarships were awarded for the year 1991/1992.  The number of scholarships has now risen to approximately 20 per academic year.  A total of 314 scholarships have been awarded since the scheme began, of which 24 have been to students from countries other than India.

Eligibility:

The Scholarships are open to:

Academically gifted and underprivileged nationals of India, under 30 years of age, who must hold at least a first class Bachelor's degree from a recognized Indian university or a comparable institution; or

Academically gifted and underprivileged non-Indian nationals, under 30 years of age, who must hold at least a first class Bachelor's degree from a recognized university or a comparable institution and who are recommended by their chosen university.

Candidates for the Felix Scholarships at Oxford should not complete the application form. Instead they should check the Felix Scholarship box in the Scholarships section of the University's Application Form for Graduate Study when applying for admission to their course. Post doctoral aspirants of Southeast Asian countries are supported by The Hitachi Scholarship Foundation who provides the scholars opportunities to pursue their post-doctorate research in the field of science and technology at Japanese universities or research institutes.

Expenses supported by the Foundation:
