Ph.D admissions at NCBS , Bangalore and DBS, Mumbai

NCBS, BANGALORE AND DBS, MUMBAI
Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Deemed University)
The National Centre for Biological Sciences is a centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. The Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) is located at TIFR in Mumbai.
Both units run vibrant graduate programmes and seek excellent students who have completed their primary degrees in basic sciences, engineering or medicine. Graduate students are recruited into the programmes after a written test conducted at several centers nationally, followed by interviews held in Mumbai (for DBS) or submission of a full application and interviews for short-listed applicants at Bangalore (for NCBS).
BIOLOGY
           PhD programme : Masters in Basic Science or Bachelors in Applied Science. These include M.Sc. (Ag), B.Tech, B.E., B.V.Sc. B.Pharma (4 yrs course), MBBS., BDS. M. Pharma.
Students with training in Physics or Chemistry are encouraged to apply to the programmes.
           Integrated Ph.D/M.Sc. by Research Programme : Bachelors in any Basic Science.
           M.Sc. Wildlife Biology & Conservation : Indian nationals who have a Bachelors degree in any discipline (with a minimum of 50% in core subjects), less than 35 years of age as on July 1 2012 and a strong interest in wildlife research and conservation.
Students who expect to complete their degrees by July 2012 are eligible to apply.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Students can apply online for hall tickets to participate in the tests. Please follow the appropriate link on this website for completing the application form. Please read the instructions carefully before you start filling up the online application form.
Students from remote areas who do not have access to internet may apply manually. They may send a request for an application form (without DD) along with a self-addressed stamped (Rs. 10) envelope (size 25cm x 17 cm) superscribed “GS-2012 to the following address:

The completed application form should be sent along with DD and two passport size photographs (one pasted on the application and one stapled to it).
Students may appear for the written test in multiple subjects if timings do not clash. Please send a separate application (including Demand Draft) for each subject. In case of online applicants, students will have to re-register with a different email id.
Students who wish to apply online and make payment by Demand Draft may send the Demand Draft with their name, reference code and telephone number written behind it. Alternately, students can make online payment by Debit/Credit Card.

Scholarship
For PhD and Integrated PhD programmes, the academic year starts from August 1, every year. The academic year for M.Sc. by research programme at DBS begins from July 1, every year. The M.Sc. Wildlife Biology & Conservation programme at Bangalore begins from mid July
PhD
Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 16,000/- (enhanced to Rs 18,000/- after registration/qualifying in the comprehensive exam) and an annual contingency grant of Rs 25,000/-, in addition to a tuition grant covering the annual fees. The annual fees are Rs 4000/- per annum.
Integrated PhD

Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs 16,000/- (enhanced to Rs 18,000/- after registration/passing the Comprehensive Exam) and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 15000/- for the first two years (enhanced to Rs. 25000/- after qualifying in the comprehensive exam). The students receive a tuition grant covering the annual fees.
The annual fees are Rs 4000/- per annum.
M.Sc. by Research (Biology) at DBS

Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs.12000/- (TIFR housing is not provided). The annual fees are Rs. 2000/- per annum.
M.Sc. Wildlife Biology & Conservation at NCBS, Bangalore

Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs. 10,000/- (hostel accommodation will be provided). The annual fees are Rs. 2000/- per annum.
