LOCATION: Philippines
SPECIALIZATION/SKILLS: Profound understanding of molecular biology/genetics with extended hands-on experience in basic molecular techniques (DNA and RNA extraction, PCR and RT-PCR), as well as sequence analyses tools; excellent English and communication skills are required, as well as computer and data analysis skills. This positions includes field work and experience in growing of rice or other crops is highly desirable.
BASIC PURPOSE: The successful candidate will work on the identification and molecular characterization of genes and pathways relevant for the development of rice with tolerance of high temperature stress. This three-year BMZ funded project is part of IRRI’s international and multi-disciplinary effort to develop rice adapted to climate-change.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Study the effect of high temperature and other stresses on the structure of the rice panicle and total spikelet number (reproductive meristem development) in field and controlled-environment conditions. 30%
2. Conduct microscopic analysis of panicle development and apply different staining techniques. 30%
3. Collect samples for molecular analysis and assist PhD student in identifying genes and pathways involved in panicle development and stress tolerance. 30%
4. Assist in other activities needed to achieve the objectives of the project.10%
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
BSc degree in physiology, molecular biology/genetics, biochemistry, or related field
Preferably (3) years with laboratory experience
