Applications are invited for ‘Tata Innovation Fellowship’, a highly competitive scheme instituted by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India to recognize and reward scientists with outstanding track record in biological sciences and a deep commitment to find innovative solutions to major problems in health care, agriculture and other areas rela ted to life sciences and biotechnology.
Objective
The scheme is aimed at rewarding interdisciplinary work where major emphasis is on innovation and translational research with a potential towards commercialization.
Eligibility
(i) The fellowship is open to Indian Nationals residing in India who are below the age of 55 years as on 21 November 2012.
(ii) The applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary Science or a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences, Engineering or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology/ related areas. The applicant must have put in several years of work in the specific area.
(iii) The candidate must have a regular position in a University/Institute/Organization and should be engaged in research and development. If he/she is availing any other fellowship, he/she will have to opt for only one of the fellowships.
(iv) The applicant should have spent at least 5 years in India before applying for the fellowship.
Nature of support
(i) The amount of the fellowship is Rs 20,000 per month in addition to regular salary from the host institute. If an awardee is receiving salary from international organization, he will be entitled for research grant, i.e. contingency only.
(ii) In addition, each Fellow will receive a contingency grant of Rs 5 lakh per annum for meeting the expenses on consumables, equipment, international and domestic travel, manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of ongoing research project under the fellowship.
(iii) The Tata Innovation Fellows would be eligible for other regular research grant(s) through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.
Host institution
(i) The candidate will continue to work at the place of his/her employment.
(ii) The Institution where the candidate is working would provide the necessary infrastructure and administrative support for pursuing the research under this fellowship.

Duration
The duration of the fellowship will be initially for three years, extendable further by two years on a fresh appraisal.

A Refresher Course on ‘Traditional and Modern Approaches in Plant Taxonomy’ for postgraduate college/university teachers and research students, will be held at Botanical Garden and HerbariumUniversity of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK Campus, Bangalore from 15 to 29 November 2012. This course is aimed at giving the participants a hands-on training on all aspects of herbarium methodology, maintenance, principles of taxonomy including molecular and cladistics aspects. A variety of teaching methods like lectures, discussions, field and herbarium work focusing on diverse aspects will facilitate their research and teaching programmes. The Course will also help the participants to gain and sharpen their skills in both traditional and modern aspects of taxonomy. The skills thus gained will help them become better researchers and teachers. The course will consist of 2–3 lectures everyday followed by equal duration of practicals/demonstrations/hands-on training.

Essential Qualification:
S. Ramaseshan Fellowships/Internships: Candidates must possess a basic degree in any branch of science. Candidates with postgraduate (after B.Sc.) degree in literature, journalism or mass communication can also apply for the fellowship or internship. Fellowships will be awarded to a limited number of exceptionally motivated candidates for a period of one year, extendable for a further period of one year. Viswanath Award. The award carries a sum of Rs 100,000, a medal and a citation. The Palaeontological Society of India invites nomination for the following awards:
1. Prof. S.N. Bhalla Medal for outstanding contributions in Micropalaeontology and allied disciplines for the year 2012.
2. Sharda Chandra Gold Medal for the best original published contribution on Indian material in any field of palaeontology for the year 2012.
Nomination can be made as per the following format.
1. Name of the award
2. Full name, age and address of the nominee
3. Qualification and position held by the nominee
4. List of significant publications for the Prof. S. N. Bhalla Gold Medal and the name of the publication with full details for the Sharda Chandra Gold Medal
5. Brief statement by the proposer (not more than 250 words) about the scientific achievement/contribution  of the nominee for justification of the awards

ANNOUNCEMENT
The Palaeontological Society of India has instituted from 2010 the Prof. S. K. Singh Memorial Gold Medal for the best paper published in the society’s journal. The medal will be awarded every year at the Annual General Body Meeting.

1. Dr R. B. Ekbote Prize: The prize is in recognition of significant research contribution in the various areas of Botany including Agricultural Botany, Plant Breeding/Genetics and Cytogenetics and consists of a citation and a token cash award of Rs 5000.
2. Shri V. P. Gokhale Prize: The prize is in recognition of significant research contribution in the various areas of Phytopathology and consists of a citation and a token cash award of Rs 5000.

Applications are invited for the position of Senior Research Fellow (SRF)/Junior Research Fellow (JRF) to work in the DST sponsored Major Collaborative Research Project between Dept of Biochemistry, Karnatak University, Dharwad and Advanced Center for Treatment Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Navi Mumbai (DST sanction letter no. SR/SO/BB-0085/2010/A).
Title of the project : Investigating the role of a mitogenic lectin from Cephalosporium curvulum, a pathogenic fungus causing mycotic keratitis
Position and duration : SRF/JRF; 36 months or as and when project terminates.
Qualification for SRF : M.Sc., Biochemistry with a Minimum of 55% and one/two years of research training in protein purification and characterization, and candidates with experience in cell biology techniques preferred.
(In case suitable SRF is not found, the position for JRF will be considered)
JRF : M.Sc., Biochemistry with a Minimum of 55% with NET-JRF qualified is preferred.
Fellowship amount : SRF: Rs 14,000 or 18,000 per month with HRA.
JRF: Rs 12,000 or 16,000 per month with HRA.

Career Researchers and Senior Professional Scientists having regular position in Indian recognized S&T institutions/universities and actively engaged in research in frontline areas in all fields of Science and Technology including Medical and Agriculture to visit Australia during the year 2012 for 3–12 months (Early Career Researches) and 1–2 weeks (Senior Scientists) under Indo-Australia S&T Visiting Fellowship Programme – 2012 supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi.
