JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a Software Engineer to join the Cheminformatics and Metabolism team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The post-holder will work within a team of 4 people to build the new Metabolomics database at the EBI. This team will closely interact with other teams at the EBI and incorporate existing technology developed in our Institute as well as elsewhere. The responsibilities of the Software Engineer are the design, implementation, documentation, debugging, testing, and support of various software components.
The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants should have a degree in a relevant field, (such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Chemistry or Biology etc) or proven professional experience. Fluency in Java and at least one of the common SQL databases, preferably MySQL, is essential. The successful applicant will have good knowledge of standard software development and the ability to use, modify and adapt other developer’s code if necessary.
The post-holder should be able to work independently with internal and external collaborators and be able to familiarise himself or herself with novel technology. They should therefore have the ability to learn and acquire new skills independently. The ideal candidate will also work well within a team and have a friendly and open personality.
