Computational Biologist position at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY

Albert Einstein College of Medicine
POST: Computational biologist
JOB LOCATION: Bronx, NY
JOB DESCRIPTION:
We seek a computational biologist with strong technical skills in bioinformatics and biostatistics to work on research that explores the role of molecular variability as a regulator of phenotype. We are looking for highly motivated people to join our new lab and help drive a new field of science.
The focus of the Mar lab is to understand how variability in biological signals, such as gene expression affects the regulatory capacity and plasticity of gene networks and the downstream consequences for phenotype. We are interested in exploring the link between transcriptional variability and models of incomplete penetrance. Early evidence, from our lab and others, supports the importance of variability as a window into studying diversity in normal human populations, with potential implications for disease processes.
At least two projects are available for an immediate start. One project explores the role of transcriptional variability in regulating pluripotency in human embryonic stem cells. A second project explores the role of transcriptional plasticity as a mechanism for conferring differential abilities to buffer disease and fight infections in healthy donors. We currently have collaborations with labs working on embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, reprogramming, obesity, cancer, and tissue-specific transcriptional networks. We have access to gene expression data sets, including some at the single cell level. Our collaborators are based in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Japan, Sweden, Toronto, California, Boston and New York.
The candidate will ideally have training in linear modeling, multivariate analysis, inference, probability and scientific computing. Most critically, the candidate is able to work on problems involving network algorithms, machine learning, and classification. Proficiency in R is required, with some skills in Python and C. The candidate should preferably be familiar with at least one area of biology.
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from all interested and qualified scientists.
