Various posts (Chemistry and Biology)at D. E. Shaw Research

D. E. Shaw Research
D. E. Shaw Research has made a conscious effort to slowly and deliberately build a small team of truly extraordinary contributors rather than assembling a larger group of individuals who are simply "very good." We welcome inquiries from candidates of all backgrounds and levels of experience who display evidence of exceptional ability, and are as selective in our hiring of support personnel as we are in identifying gifted scientists and engineers.
A few of the areas in which we currently have particular needs are outlined below. It's worth noting, however, that we are generally less interested in hiring someone to fill a particular "slot" than in attracting extraordinarily capable individuals who are likely to make significant contributions to our efforts over the long term. For that reason, we are open to considering unusually well-qualified applicants even if none of these particular positions seems like an immediate match.
CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY
BIOMOLECULAR FORCE FIELD DEVELOPERS
Candidates should have world-class credentials in chemistry, physics, or biophysics, or in a relevant area of computational science or applied mathematics, and must have unusually strong research and software engineering skills. Relevant areas of experience might include the development of physics-based force fields for condensed phase systems, parameterization of existing models for new classes of molecules, the development and application of highly accurate quantum chemical methods for biological and organic molecules, the study of biologically important systems using molecular dynamics and/or Monte Carlo simulation, and the application of statistical mechanics to biomolecular systems, but specific knowledge of any of these areas is less critical than exceptional intellectual ability and a demonstrated track record of achievement.
COMPUTATIONAL CHEMISTS
Candidates should have world-class credentials in computational chemistry, biology, or physics, or in a relevant area of computer science or applied mathematics, and must have unusually strong research and software engineering skills.  Relevant areas of experience might include the computation of protein-ligand binding free energies, molecular dynamics and/or Monte Carlo simulations of biomolecular systems, application of statistical mechanics to biomolecular systems, free energy perturbation methods, and methods for speeding up evaluation of electrostatic energies, but specific knowledge of any of these areas is less critical than exceptional intellectual ability and a demonstrated track record of achievement.  Current areas of interest within the lab include the prediction of protein structures and binding free energies, structure- and ligand-based drug design, de novo ligand design algorithms, and the development of special-purpose hardware to accelerate computational chemistry simulations.  Opportunities are available in New York and Hyderabad, India.
SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATES
D. E. Shaw Research is seeking early-career scientists and engineers with extraordinary records of achievement to join the group on a full-time basis.  Serious consideration will be given to candidates with exceptional quantitative abilities, superb communication skills, and a bachelor's or master's degree in the natural sciences and/or engineering.  Successful candidates will work closely with a number of the world's leading biochemists, electrical engineers, and computer scientists, and will have the opportunity to make groundbreaking contributions within the fields of biology, chemistry, and medicine.  Scientific Associates are expected to commit to D. E. Shaw Research for a minimum of two years; following their time at D. E. Shaw Research, previous Scientific Associates have gone on to Ph.D. programs at Columbia, Harvard, and Princeton.  For exceptionally qualified undergraduate and graduate students seeking short-term employment, a limited number of internships are also available.
STRUCTURAL BIOLOGISTS
Candidates should have world-class credentials in structural or computational biology, and must have unusually strong research skills. Relevant areas of experience might include structural bioinformatics, computational studies of biomolecular interactions, X-ray crystallography, and NMR spectroscopy, but specific knowledge of any of these areas is less critical than exceptional intellectual ability and a demonstrated track record of achievement. Current areas of interest within the lab include the application of simulation methods to both fundamental and practical problems in molecular biophysics, such as dynamics and allostery. Systems of interest range from ultrafast-folding proteins to functionally significant biomolecules such as protein kinases and membrane transporters
