POST: Head of Operations, Stem Cells and Cellular Phenotyping Facility

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, based south of Cambridge  islooking for a Head of Operations with an excellent track record of operational scientific, project & people management to work with the Senior Management Team to set up and ultimately run this important new high throughput facility.  You will be totally accountable for the operational delivery of the services provided and ensuring that these meet customer requirements.  These will encompass: sample reception, transduction, derivation, differentiation, informatics and cellular phenotyping.  Once implemented this fully operational pipeline will support new lines of scientific enquiry by allowing us to assess the impact of genetic variation at a cellular level in health and disease.

Working alongside the Senior Management Team you will contribute towards the delivery of the overall stem cell and cellular phenotyping strategy, collaborating with customers to understand the scientific needs of the programme and forecast future demand.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS
·         Demonstrable success in delivering a large number of highly complex projects through others on time, in budget and to agreed quality standards.
·         Significant experience in an operational scientific management role
·         Experience in determining and establishing KPI’s, SLA’s
·         Experience of successfully resolving a range of people related issues effectively involving formal mechanisms
·         Highly developed communication skills with experience of dealing with people at all levels successfully
·         High level of influencing and negotiating skills
·         Excellent Relationship builder
·         Demonstrable leadership skills
·         Strong people management skills and ability to manage a large diverse team
·         Demonstrable evidence of coaching managers successfully
·         Proven organisational skills with the ability to plan and schedule effectively.
·         Proven ability to be able to deliver customer specifications
·         Strategic thinking skills, ability to see the ‘bigger picture’
·         Experience of working in a constantly changing environment with the ability to interpret management information to amend plans
·         Experience in successfully managing significant change

·         Skills in financial management, budget and resources
·         Familiarity with Regulatory requirements for Human samples/tissue

IDEAL SKILLS
·         Experience in operational management involving, tissue culture, liquid handling robotics, analytical equipment, imaging equipment, LIMs and containment requirements
·         Familiarity with specific scientific terminology and application
·         Knowledge and experience of cell biology
·         PhD in biological science; background in life sciences
