Fertility Preservation Options
One Day Symposium
20th December 2011
ORGANIZING SECRETARY: Dr Deepa Bhartiya, Scientist E, Stem Cell Biology Dept, NIRRH
OVERVIEW: Recent advances in cancer treatment have resulted in increased number of young cancer survivors who have yet not completed their family. Azoospermia in men and premature ovarian failure in women are common side effects of cancer therapy which subsequently leads to infertility. The symposium is aimed to spread awareness and update the participants with the current scientific, clinical, technological developments in fertility preservation. This will help improve the quality of life of cancer survivors as they may be ensured of biological parenthood rather than depending on donor gametes or adoption.
TARGET AUDIENCE: The symposium will be useful to reproductive endocrinologists, hematology-oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, psychologists, basic scientists, clinical researchers, oncology nurses, social workers and others interested in fertility preservation.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the symposium is to educate medical professionals to facilitate referrals for fertility preservation, define ethical and legal issues for making a gonadal tissue bank, highlight the impact of cancer treatment on fertility and reproduction, update on the current status of gamete cryopreservation, and also provide a critical assessment of the strategies during ovarian transplantation.
