Positions: 1
REFERENCE NUMBER: IRS-2011-06-DB
APPLY BY: 30 September 2011
We are seeking a molecular breeder for abiotic stresses who will work in close collaboration with breeders, geneticists, and physiologists in developing pre-breeding products with increased tolerance for abiotic stresses, particularly heat and phosphorous (P) deficiency, and who will integrate molecular approaches to enhance tolerance for heat and P deficiency of high-yielding varieties suitable for irrigated and rainfed ecosystems.
MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Apply molecular approaches in close collaboration with breeders, geneticists, and physiologists in developing pre-breeding products with enhanced tolerance for heat and P deficiency
· Identify traits and underlying QTLs/genes that enhance tolerance for low-P conditions
· Map QTLs/genes governing heat tolerance at different growth stages
· Integrate molecular breeding approaches to transfer and pyramid existing and novel QTLs for the development of varieties tolerant of heat and P deficiency for irrigated and rainfed ecosystems by marker-assisted selection
· Participate in degree and non-degree training programs and publish results in scientific journals
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
· PhD in plant breeding or a related field
· At least 3 years of postdoctoral experience in plant breeding, particularly molecular marker application; experience in rice breeding, particularly in abiotic stresses and mapping genes/QTLs for heat tolerance and P deficiency
· Excellent written and spoken English
Screening will start on 30 September 2011 and will continue until a suitable candidate has been found.
