Commonwealth Scholarship and fellowship programme 2011

COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS 2011
This is an annual scheme made available to all Commonwealth countries by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission. The India programme is managed jointly by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU, UK); Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and the British Council.
The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has announced the COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS PLAN, 2012-UK.
The Scholarship is open for applications for 2012-13. Last date to apply is 7th October 2011 for applying online and 12th October 2011 for receiving application in the Ministry by post/by hand.
ELIGIBILITY
A fellowship is available in any academic subject (including Medicine and Dentistry). Fellowships are primarily intended for younger established teachers (not for the senior members of the department) to enhance their teaching and/or research experience, or in the case of Medicine and Dentistry, clinical skills relevant to what they're going to study at the institution they choose.
Commonwealth Fellowships are not available for higher degrees.
 SUBJECTS:
Medicine: all branches.
Master's
Engineering and Technology: computer studies; electronics; environmental studies; remote sensing technology; communication engineering; bio-technology / biochemical engineering; robotics (including artificial intelligence).
Science (Pure and Applied): mathematics; molecular biology; physics and chemistry (including pharmaceutical/medicinal chemistry).
Agriculture and Allied fields: all branches.
Humanities and Social Sciences: history; sociology; management studies; fine art; (including western painting, art history, graphic design and sculpture); economics, philosophy and psychology, computer applications and english language.
AWARD:Fellowship
DURATION:
Commonwealth Fellowships are for six months. Awards normally run from October in any year (i.e. the beginning of the academic year in the UK).
SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE:
Up to 70 Fellowships are available.
INSTITUTION:
General
If you are a candidate or sponsor you may indicate your own preferences on what you would  like to study and where you would like to study it.  If you have already made independent approaches to universities in the UK, or have received offers of places, you should report this to the Commission.
However, the Commission may (after seeking advice in the UK) decide to the offer you a fellowship at another institution.  Your fellowship for any programme of study must be approved by the Commission and named in the formal letter of award. You must also be able to demonstrate that your study programme will be closely related to the academic work when you return to take up the award.
Medicine and Dentistry
If you are a medically qualified applicant and your programme requires you to practice clinically, or to work in a laboratory department reporting on samples from patients, you can only be considered eligible for registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) or the General Dental Council.

Under new regulations, if you require registration with the General Medical Council and your primary medical qualification is recognised only for limited registration, you will be required to show competence in the English Language by reaching a satisfactory standard in the IELTS Test.
However, if you have previously held registration with the General Medical Council to practice in the UK, you may not be required to take the IELTS Test.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
To apply for a fellowship, you must:
·         be an Indian citizen residing in India
·         have completed tertiary education in English medium
·         hold a doctorate (or other postgraduate qualifications accepted as sufficient for the career you are in)  
·         have been awarded your doctorate no less than five and no more than ten years from the date of taking up the Fellowship  
·         have at least two-years experience as a staff member of a university or similar institution in your home country
·         be aged 40 or under at time of applying.
WHO SELECTS THE CANDIDATES
The preliminary selection of candidates for Academic Staff Fellowships is carried out in India by University Grants Commission (UGC). The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) London does the final selection on the basis of the nominations sent by the UGC.
HOW IT WORKS
To be selected, you must be an academic staff member of staff and get nominated by the executive head of the university you work full time at. This is followed by shortlisting of applications and personal interviews in New Delhi.
 WHEN TO APPLY
You must apply for these scholarships at least one year before the course starts. Deadlines vary, so you must check that you know what the deadline is before applying.
WHEN WE ADVERTISE
The UGC sends circulars to all universities in July or August every year for nominations for the awards beginning the following academic year.
WHEN WE INTERVIEW
The interviews are normally held in November or December for the awards beginning September in the following year
VISAS
Student visas for the UK will be arranged gratis by the British Council.
AWARD
Master's/M.Phil/ PhD/ six-months clinical training/Fellowship.
FUNDING
University fees, scholar's return travel, allowance for books, apparatus, approved study, travel, personal maintenance (plus allowances, where applicable, for spouse and children). Fixed Research Support Grant in case of research.

If you are already in the UK, the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) can help you with general information concerning the scheme, but it cannot issue application forms to international students.
