BASIC PURPOSE: This scientist will develop and lead a research program on management approaches that will result in the development of practical tools and strategies that address chronic and emerging rice diseases in the context of changing production scenarios and climate change. The research will contribute to Program 3 of the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP) “Ecological and sustainable management of rice-based production systems.” The scientist will collaborate closely with a team of agronomists, crop production specialists, soil scientists, and breeders working on diseases and insects in current and future rice-based cropping systems.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This position involves all aspects of developing and leading a crop disease research-for-development program in collaboration with scientists from other disciplines:
- Conduct disease surveillance in a practical context and monitoring of emerging disease problems, leading to practical management recommendations
- Identify priority chronic and emerging rice diseases and develop appropriate disease management strategies
- Integrate crop disease management approaches (including host-plant resistance and crop management) to derive practical recommendations for disease management by farmers as part of innovative, integrated crop health management approaches
- Develop disease management decision tools for extension
- Develop strategies to mitigate effects of climate change on rice crop diseases
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- PhD in plant pathology/pests/diseases or a related discipline
- At least 3 years of post-PhD research experience. Strong background in field-oriented plant pathology research and extension. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work in an international environment.
- Excellent written and spoken English
