Scientist/Senior Scientist-Legume/Cereal Entomology at ICRISAT

POST: Scientist/Senior Scientist-Legume/Cereal Entomology (West and Central Africa)
ICRISAT seeks to appoint an Entomologist work on Host plant resistance and integrated pest management in West and Central Africa, based in Niamey, Niger. S/he should have the knowledge of the crops and the cropping systems in the semi-arid tropics, associated pest problems, and the experience to develop strategies for integrated pest management. S/he is expected to evaluate germplasm, breeding lines and mapping populations for resistance to insects in sorghum and pearl millet and legumes (groundnut and chickpea/pigeonpea) in collaboration with breeders and molecular biologists, and develop modules for pest management in cereal based cropping systems. The position will be based at ICRISAT Niamey, but will have the overall responsibilities to work in collaboration with ICRISAT scientists based in WCA, and with the NARS and other partners in the region.
THE JOB:
•Plan and execute R4D on regionally important pests on cereals (sorghum and pearl millet) and legumes (groundnut) to assist in crop improvement and management
•Develop a database of pest spectrum, assess pest-associated losses and establish damage thresholds for key pests in cereal and legume based cropping systems.
•Develop/adapt protocols for large-scale screening of germplasm and breeding materials and mapping populations for resistance to insect pests.
•Work with crop improvement scientists to develop cultivars with resistance to insect pests.
•Develop a comprehensive, practical, and user-friendly integrated pest management modules for cereal and legume based cropping systems in the region.
•Organize training programs for the partner scientists and research support staff on host plant resistance to insects and IPM. 
•Analyze, summarize and interpret experimental data and prepare reports.
•Develop project proposals to seek funding support from the donors.
•Experience/knowledge in pest modeling
The Person:
•Must have a PhD in Entomology from a reputed University, with 5 to 10 years of post-doctoral experience in HPR and IPM in cereals and/or grain legumes.
•A strong record in R4D as evidenced by publications in internationally peer reviewed journals.
•Strong background in agricultural R4D, dissemination of information, and collaboration with the NARS sand other partners.
•Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in diverse multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
•Excellent communications skills in written and spoken English, and in French.
•A willingness to travel nationally and internationally.
EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
This is an internationally recruited staff position with an attractive and competitive salary and benefits package payable in US dollars. The position is initially for three years, and extendable depending on performance of the incumbent and funding availability. An attractive compensation will be offered for the right candidate.
