Postdoctoral Associate (Genomics and/or Molecular Biology/Microbiology &/or Metabolic Engineering) at Papoutsakis lab

Postdoctoral Associate in Genomics and/or Molecular Biology/Microbiology &/or Metabolic Engineering
AVAILABILITY & FUNDING
There are always research projects open for such positions in the Papoutsakis lab, and occasionally there exist also funds for supporting exceptional candidates.
For strong candidates with exceptional qualifications, and who are also US citizens or permanent residents, the possibility of applying for an external postdoctoral fellowship (an NIH NRSA, NSF or other) can be explored by working closely with Dr. Papoutsakis. In that case, Dr. Papoutsakis will commit initial funding while awaiting decisions on external fellowship support. In such case, the process of applying for such external fellowships should start as soon as possible and at least 6 months prior to the time the applicant expects to start in the Papoutsakis lab. The external fellowship application must be in place at least 3 months prior to joining the lab.
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION(S)
Design and carry out experiments for molecular and/or genomic analysis (including DNA microarrays, ChIP-on-chip, protein-protein interactions, and proteome analysis) to elucidate cellular programs and phenotypes. The goal is to understand complex cellular programs, and develop metabolic engineering strategies to develop new strains in prokaryotes with desirable complex phenotypes in clostridia, E. coli and other platform organisms. Work will include projects which require team work and will include interacting with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. It also involves assistance in preparation of research grants, and supervision of activities of currently funded grants. Additional training opportunities include the possibility of taking advanced courses, assist in teaching specialized courses and laboratory experiments, and supervising BS or MS students on research projects.
Appointment for such positions is for ca. three years. A minimal commitment of two years is necessary. Salary will be commensurate with experience and publication record.
DEGREE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
•Must have a Ph.D. degree in one of the following disciplines: Molecular Biology, Molecular Microbiology, Cell Biology, Genomics, Biochemical Engineering or Bioengineering but with some training in molecular biology.
•Strong molecular biology skills (DNA, RNA and protein level analysis), and desire to acquire such skills and develop genomic tools.
•US citizens or residents interested in academic careers and/or desiring to apply for an individual NIH postdoctoral fellowship will be given special attention.
•Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to organize material for grant reports and new grant preparation, and ability to work with others are also a must. Desire and ability to mentor graduate and undergraduate students is desirable.
•Experience with DNA arrays or other genomic tools is a plus.
